A rather tough shop location is reflected in the shop where you are met by a metal faced door that an H-Block would be proud of.

There was a wide choice of £40 DVDs (4 for £100)

The film and magazine room was dimly lit red which made it both atmospheric and a tad difficult to read any small print.

Most DVDs are £40 (3 for £80) with 50% exchange. There were a few at £60.

A license was awarded at the end of February and the shop was opened in May 2006

It is the first license to be granted by Neath and Port Talbot Council and was approved despite the 47 letters of objection

The shop is located on a busy street in central Portsmouth. Parking is available opposite the shop but is quite limited. The shop itself is a bit dark and dingy. The assistant was quiet friendly but rather tight lipped. When asked if the shop was licensed or not he said “I don’t know I’ve only been here for a week”, but latter admitted that he thought it would cost £15000 to get a license and that it was not really an option.

The shop sells a fair range of sex toys, accessories and novelty goods together with a range of hardcore magazines. There is also a very small selection of 100 or so videos all appeared to be 18 certificates but priced £20 - £40. They run a video exchange deal but why bother? If you want some sex toys or novelty goods it might be worth a visit but is not the place to buy videos

This new Private shop is very conveniently situated at one end of Commercial road just 2 doors down from Mc Donald’s. There was a good range of R18 material available, amounting to 350 video and another 350 DVD titles according to the staff with more expected soon. There was also a fair selection of sex toys and some magazines.

The two male staff were very friendly and unassuming and quite willing to let people browse on their own or provide advise if requested. Portsmouth City Council’s foolish provision that *anyone* entering the shop *must* show proof of age had already been abandon by the time I arrived at midday, which was a shame as no one has asked me for proof of age for more than 20 years.

The DVD’s and Video’s are expensive with every one marked up at £40, but there are also numerous offers available such as 2 for £60, 4 for £100, bundled packs of 10 for £60 and 20 for £100. There is also 50% off for part exchange (with receipt) and it is well worth asking to see what other offers they are willing to make. I bought Private Gladiator parts 1 and 2 (3 discs) for £40.

Overall a bit expensive, but still worth a visit and definitely a massive improvement over Portsmouth’s only other sex shop in Albert Road which is unlicensed.
