The cinema version was passed '18' uncut following expert legal advice. Nevertheless the Board was concerned by the film's climactic scene, which shows an under-aged girl - played by a 13 year old actress - being raped. Our legal advice confirmed that the scene was not indecent within the meaning of the Protection of Children Act 1978 and the Board therefore agreed to pass the scene intact.

The Board also took the opinion of a leading consultant clinical psychologist at the time of the original cinema submission. He expressed a concern that, in his clinical experience, the rape sequence could potentially be used by paedophiles to 'groom' their victims. The Board was satisfied, however, that this concern about potential abuse was minimal in the context of an adult cinema release where the possibility of children being taken to the cinema for grooming was remote.

Videos, by contrast, are more easily accessible for personal use by abusive individuals and the risk of the video's use for grooming was felt to be far higher. Furthermore, the potential for the scene to be played repeatedly and out of context on video concerned the Board far more so than on film. It was felt therefore that, on video, the scene presented a particular problem as both stimulus material and to validate abusive behaviour. The Board's concerns were confirmed by a further opinion from a second consultant psychologist specifically in relation to the video release, which echoed the opinion of her colleague. The scene was therefore removed in its entirety on video.

Summary Review: Halloween-esque

Monster Hunter is the Halloween-esque 'sequel' to 1981's insomniac's dream Anthropophagous. This time around D'Amato brings to us a sense of pace, making Monster Hunter much more enjoyable.

The added gore (including an ultra-torturous scene involving an oven) and cool electronic music score is a nice bonus.

The story brings back George Eastman as our favorite cannibal, this time somewhere in the US being hunted by a priest.

A bit boring at times but Eastman's presence is over powering and the end involving a 'vegetable' overcoming her disabilities to face the beast is fairly ironic.

When the cinema version was cut, the video distributors, Medusa, withdrew the uncut video and replaced it with the BBFC cut version. But the video was added to the list of banned video nasties in November 1983 anyway. It stayed on the list throughout the panic and so became one of the collectable DPP39s.

At the time of the original cinema release a film shown in theaters wasn't supposed to cross the 135 minute barrier and so Cameron had to trim his movie down. Many scenes shedding more light on the characters have been removed. However, the most important missing scene is the weather changes and the participation of the NTI's in them (when Bud is aboard the NTIs' vessel). This sequence alone lasts more then five minutes and includes a spectacular scene with a tsunami 1000 feet high.

After Cameron was able to release Aliens in an extended version in 1992 he followed with the release of the Special Edition version of The Abyss in 1993. He recovered his favorite version. Missing visual effects shots, like the wave, were finished. Thanks to the new scenes, who point towards the danger of WWIII, the movie becomes a different, more serious tone und also explains the NTIs' actions.

The Plot is told with a few sentences: Women gets kidnapped by a group of crippled Terrorists, known as "Accion Mutante". In my Opinion, Alex de la Iglesia has done a very good job - it's an excellent film, a macabre Masterpiece beside the Mainstream.

Let me show you a scene we cut from Adventure Duo which features teenage heroes who get into all sorts of adventures, yet the film also contains very realistic portrayals of sex including autoeroticism and sexual assault. This is from Adventure Duo 2 which is set in Japan during the Second World War. We are introduced to an impotent scientist whose wife is sexually frustrated and the episode starts with her masturbating in a highly realistic and sexually arousing fashion. Her husband interrupts her and she asks him to make love to her but he refuses and goes back to his laboratory. A few minutes later a group of soldiers arrive and decide to humiliate the scientist by raping his wife in front of him. It's one of the longest, strongest and highly realistic rape scenes I have ever seen in Japanese animation. And what the Board found particularly worrying is that this woman is forced to admit to the rapist that she is enjoying the experience. And when the woman finally orgasms there's no doubt that the underlying message is that women can enjoy rape as long as it's done well.

And in cutting this scene, we're making a decision about the presentation of sexual violence across the board, whether the audience is 18 or 80. It was our view that even if this material isn't corrupting underage viewers, current social attitudes dictate that this kind of sexual violence is unacceptable. Not only does the law compel us to censor material, public opinion does as well, and public opinion is something we monitor very closely.

The BBFC explained the PG certificate:

A double bill of documentaries dealing with ecological issues. The first deals with the community of Bristol Bay in Alaska and their objections to the creation of a copper and gold mine. The second deals with two kayakers travelling across the country using used oil instead of petrol for fuel. The film was passed PG for mild language and a mild drug reference.

BBFC Guidelines at PG allow mild bad language , in this case ass and screw (this up) . The film also includes a passing mention of LSD but this occurs in the context of a song lyric playing over the end credits (I once heard a man talk with his heart about the Lord and the army and LSD) and is therefore considered innocuous and undetailed enough for PG .

The film also contains some natural footage of a bear catching a live salmon, which is seen flapping on the ground before being eaten.

Adventures of a Teenage Dragonslayer

The BBFC cut 23s from the 2010 High Fliers R2 DVD.

The BBFC explained

• A compulsory cut was required to remove sight of children playing with fireworks in a work aimed at children.
• Additionally, company chose to make a further cut to remove a use of discriminatory language (moron) in order to achieve a PG classification. A 12 was available without this cut.

Adventures of Kekkou Kamen: Part 1 : Naked Justice

Cuts as described by a BBFC examiner: When the Board first saw The Adventures of Kekkou Kamen, we were quite taken aback as we hadn't seen anything like it before. The series directly associates comedy with violence and sexualised violence. It features a naked superheroine who goes around with only a hood on beating up the bad guys with nunchakus, which are illegal weapons in this country. Though we allowed some scenes to remain in which Kekkou was just holding nunchakus, if a scene glamourised and promoted their use, then it became a problem and was cut.

The other, more troubling issue with Kekkou Kamen is that it is a comedy which has at its heart a sort of sexualised violence. This scene was cut from the first episode . It's where a group of sadistic schoolteachers make jokes at the expense of a young girl who is hung up and then whipped and tortured by a sadistic Nazi. This is the crux of the sequence, where the girl is stripped with a whip and we get an eroticised view of her breasts and naked torso. This is very over the top and is meant to be a satire on the Japanese education system, but our feeling was that there was enough explicit sexual imagery to undercut the satire and introduce an element of arousal and titillation, which is reinforced by the change of music

Summary Review: Surprisingly well-crafted

An English soldier (Cliver) returns home from the Zulu war with the daughter of a tribal king (Gemser) as his slave (a gift that he was given for saving the kings life). Not at all pleased with being a slave, the Ebony princess plots her revenge starting with the seduction of the mistress. Jealousy spreads like wildfire and before you know it, she has turned the household into a lustful frenzy of sex and hatred.

This film is actually far more twisted than it sounds. One of the more disturbing moments being a sequence about the filming of an inquisition-themed porno that turns into the sadistic rape of a lesbian / virgin by the filthy and none too bright gardener.

Sporting tons of full-frontal nudity, simulated lesbian and straight sex and some hard-core (as seen in an old stag film), this has the sleazy goods atmospheric setting, and is definitely recommended.

Summary Review: Wonderful

An infectious happy film from the golden age of porn. Especially commendable to see the talented and very attractive Kristine DeBell get involved in a little hardcore. Not really full on, but the near mainstream quality of the film makes the few hardcore scenes that little bit more worthwhile.

Alligator is an over the top, ridiculous and fun man vs. beast horror movie. Think a B-movie version of Jaws if he were on steroids and able to jump out of the water and run through the streets looking for food.

The girl is modestly hot and topless through most of it. This is a must-see for fans of cannibals.

Review from imdb: Unusual horror

"American Gothic" is an unusual horror thriller in the simple way that it is character-driven - it doesn't care about suspense and does NOT go overboard in the gore department - although it lapses into Body Count Movie cliches.

It also depends on the victims behaving much more stupidly than you would expect real people to (then again, that's commonplace in slasher films). It's a pretty dumb movie but also dumb enough to be mildly entertaining (although I must stress the word MILDLY).

Rod Steiger as usual is given an opportunity to go wildly over the top, and Yvonne DeCarlo, a.k.a. Lily Munster, is on hand as his wife. These two veterans tend to act rings around their younger co-stars.

Summary Review: Holds up well

American soldier, obviously very skilled in martial arts, single-handedly takes on mercenaries in the Philippines.

For being 20 years old this movie holds up remarkably well.

New recruit Michael Dudikoff unwillingly gets mixed up in some illegal arms transaction between crooked Army brass and a group of ninjas. He also accidentally arouses the lustful attention of the Colonel's hot tan daughter!

Some reviewers mention this as a "guilty pleasure" I disagree. With great fight scenes, icky sound effects every time somebody gets stabbed, a fun story and a energetic performance by Steve James there's no way you can classify this as a guilty pleasure. It's too good for that.

American Ninja 1, 2 & 3 represent everything that bad, low-budget action movies should be: negligible plotting, lame dialogue, wooding acting, and plenty of semi-believable martial-arts action.

Here, in one sentence, is the plot of both movies: an American martial-arts whiz (played by Michael Dudikoff in the first two movies, and some other guy in the third one), with help from his well-muscled friend Jackson, takes on a sinister tycoon's private army of ninjas.

Not that plot really matters, since it's interrupted about every five minutes for a fight scene. Dudikoff and the other guy can't really act, but they can fight, and that's all that really matters. No self-respecting fan of bad action should be without this DVD.

OK. American Ninja 3 - Blood Hunt. Starring David Bradley as the lead. I don't know why Dudikoff quit, but I wish that it hadn't happened. Michael Dudikoff of 'American Ninja' 1 & 2 comes out of retirement to save David Bradley of 'American Ninja' 3 who is captured in Africa by a band of evil ninja's. Say what you want but I love this movie. After all, who doesn't love story's where a few brave warriors defeat all odds and the enemy to save the day!

Obviously not an Academy Award winner, but who cares. This is a total guy film. A couple of buddies with a six pack or two and you're good to go! Not to forget, the late Robin Stille is a very attractive addition to the story.

Here we get the "PG-13/Karate Kid wanna-be" version of American Ninja. David Bradley (American Ninja 3 & 4) returns but this time he plays a different character.

Another bummer is that now the great fight sequences are gone. The fights from the previous Ninja instalments are more tamed down, kid friendly battle scenes with Hiro making stupid comments every now and then.

It's as if the filmmakers were targeting fans of the Karate Kid series instead of fans the violent R-Rated American Ninja franchise. Mistake.

Amityville II: Possession is actually one impressively repulsive little flick, trafficking as it does in a massively dysfunctional family, incest, bloody murder, demonic possession, priests neglecting needy parishioners to go romping off on a hunting expedition, heads exploding like rotten melons, and lots of nasty creepy slimy things factory designed to go bump in the night.

And yet for all this slick, heavy, oily coating of sleaze, Italian director Damiano Damiani has served up a bracingly disturbing little ode to the noxious, infectious power of evil and the strength of the Dark. Bravo, Maestro Damiani, Bravo!

I wasn't expecting anything at all from Amityville 2, so imagine my surprise when I found a full-bore, absolutely relentless, tastily atmospheric little horror flick that practically exuded evil through its pores: Amityville 2: Possession is certainly not for the fainthearted.

When all is said and done, Amityville 2 is a sick, wicked, twisted wreck of a film, tied up in ribbons and stylish bows and sincerely, honestly terrifying at points. Yes it drags, in the end; and yes, it ransacks Blatty's far more successful Exorcist---but I guarantee you it will give you nightmares. Isn't that what hauntings, and the movies that adore them, are all about?

Dutch director Dick Maas clearly has a flair for entertainment. This serial killer film is lifted above the norm by a series of fantastic sequences; from creepy murder scenes to a hilariously over the top speed boat chase through the canals of Amsterdam, Amsterdamned is a delight to watch from start to finish.

The plot is basically your run of the mill serial killer yarn, but it's lifted above the norm because of the fact that the murderer himself is water-based. Amsterdam's canals make for his home, as the murderous diver drags anyone who comes too close to the river to their doom. We follow the trail of murders and the police investigation into the crimes.

Dick Maas bombards the audience with stunning location shots, deliriously entertaining sequences and some very sinister moments of horror to ensure that Amsterdamned never becomes trite or dull - and besides, every time there's a danger of the film going downhill, our competent director is on hand with another grisly murder sequence! The atmosphere is always foreboding as it is made clear that the murderer could strike at any time.

I've got to say that I was a little disappointed by the end. However it doesn't really matter how it ends because you've just witnessed what is one of the finest films ever to come out of the Netherlands. Personally, I loved every minute of this great film and really can't recommend it highly enough!

The BBFC further explained their 12A rating:

ANGELS & DEMONS is a thriller drama about attempts to stop a secret organisation from destroying the Papacy. It was passed '12A' for scenes of moderate violence and horror.

These include the sight of a dead man with a rat eating inside the corpse's mouth, a man bleeding on the steps of the Vatican, a bound man dangling over a fire as attempts are made to save him and a man setting himself on fire. These are permitted under '12A' Guidelines which say that violence must not dwell on detail; and there should be no emphasis on injuries or blood although occasional gory moments are allowed.

Sustained moderate threat or menace are permitted under '12A' Guidelines. There is such tension as a couple of men find themselves trapped in an airtight underground library after the ventilation system has failed. In a different scene, a bound man with a weight tied around him is thrown into water; he struggles fitfully under water before being rescued.

There is also mild language. The mild language is infrequent and includes 'hell' and 'bastard'.

I have always preferred Al Adamson's action epics to his schlock monster pics (though I love both genres). Satan's Sadists is Adamson at his prime in the action field and who could top that? That's why Angels' Wild Women comes as such a disappointment.

The storyline is simple: while the Angels are away, their women play. Well, sort of. The most they do is assault a farmhand before falling into the clutches of a religious cult. Adamson regulars Regina Carrol and Vicki Volante play two of the biker women, Margot and Terry.

Much of the movie is dedicated to footage of the Angels getting into brawls, having drinking competitions, and necking with their women. So, despite the provocative title that promises a lot of fun viewing, the movie doesn't really spend a lot of time with the titular women.

The amazing poster for this film delivers a lot more than the film does. For Adamson fanatics only.

Review from US Amazon: Flawed but Good

"The Antichrist", also known as "The Tempter", is a flawed but surprisingly good little Italian horror film. No doubt, a fair portion of the film (the latter part) is an "Exorcist" wannabe, but everything that leads up to the big exorcism is really quite different and interesting. And, yes, there's a big orgy scene during a Satanic ceremony at one point, and yes, it does involve Ippolita tasting the business end of a goat, but that part is more implied than anything.

Now, as for the "rip-off" exorcism aspect (though I don't see why we should only have one film involving an exorcism and call all others "rip-offs"), yeah, some of the effects are laughable and it doesn't have the scares of the classic Linda Blair film (and Carla Gravina is no hottie-hot-hottie Linda Blair), but it still works for the story being presented and has its own, lighter brand of creepiness.

I did find it rather amusing how the characters of the film constantly sent mixed messages about what they believed in, in regards to supernatural vs. science, as well as claiming things like psychic phenomenon to be established scientific facts, but on the whole this movie is successful as what it should be, a piece of entertainment. It is entertaining throughout, and the story is engaging.

The Tempter is an abridged version of The Antichrist and was passed 18 with an additional 13s of BBFC cuts

Summary Review: Entertaining

Part of a trilogy with Canterbury Tales and Decameron. The acting is underwhelming and the sex is pretty sterile. However the visual style is very impressive and the film is entertaining enough.

Well, at least I found it to be hilarious. I really did get into the Evil Dead series, it was so silly how it even started. One of the best movie trilogies of all time. Not to mention I couldn't believe the fan base these movies have. So it's good to know that I'm not alone.

Army of Darkness starts where Evil Dead 2 left off. Ashley has now gone back in time to the mid-evil times where he has to find a way back to his time. But the people he has met through this time think that he is the one who will save them all from the evil dead. They promise to help him find a way back if he saves them. Along that journey, he meets a beautiful peasant girl, Sheila, and they have a romantic affair. Along his journey to save the people, he must retrieve the "Book of the Dead", but when he slurs the words and does a half assed job of it, the book rises an evil twin of Ash's and leads his Army of Darkness to destroy the village Ash has promised to save.

This movie has great laughs and is a great end to this terrific trilogy. You won't regret seeing it, trust me.

Review from UK Amazon: Unconventional gangster movie

As tears go by is an interesting and cinematographically beautiful film set in Mongkok, a district in Hong Kong. This movie is directed by Won Kar Wai, an artist that can take a premise and develop it so well that the story he tells turns into reality. In this case, that premise is how to tell the story of a person without a future, of someone that believes that People like us don't have tomorrows.

The main character of As tears go by is Wah (Andy Lau), a well-known Hong Kong mobster that leads a very dangerous life. He is respected and feared, and has only two objectives in life: to stay alive and to take care of his family. That last objective is a little difficult in what concerns to his younger brother Fly (Jackie Cheung), a young man that wants to belong to a triad, but doesn't have what it takes to be respected in a violent environment.

From my point of view, this unconventional gangster movie is worth your time.

As far as I remember, my UK “Made in Hongkong”-VHS Video suffered one more cut, when Andy Lau presses Maggie Cheung against the Wall while they were standing on the stairs. There was a small "jump" in this scene, missing when he touches/hits (?) her face. The Hongkong DVD did not have that “jump”. It's only a second or so, so you may miss this moment easily...

James Cameron has re-inserted the Na'vi lovemaking scene. Cameron explained that he removed the scene for the initial theatrical run after getting a negative reaction from test audiences: I always felt that it was a good moment, so I wanted to put it back in,

Cameron described the lovemaking scene between Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana noting that it lasts all of about 20 seconds. It's been restored, every last frame of it. Seriously. I would say, just so that we correctly manage people's expectations, it does not change our rating at all. I would call it more of an alien foreplay scene. It's not like they're ripping their clothes off and going at it.

Review from imdb

As I ruminate over the matter right now, this is my favorite film of the genre. The general consensus of this film's silliness does not discourage me. Horror is the most cinematic of cinema avenues, and this one works for me because it evokes a mood through atmosphere and sustains it.

Ostensibly we have a story about a mad doctor who steals female bodies and uses their individual parts to patch up a unified whole. The real patching up lies in what Franco does here in regard to elements from horror past. We have Morpho, who is a composite of creatures: a Frankenstein, a Dracula, the deformed Karloff monster from The Raven. And we have Orlof, who embodies a myriad of established characters, notably Doctor Gogol from Mad Love.

And it's all wrapped up in the atmosphere of such Univeral classics. The atmosphere drips. This is a wonderful film.

This is a very serious and devastating drama, based on true events that took place early in 17th Century in Italy and emphasizing on the hypocrisy and abuse of power of the Catholic Church.

The story is incredibly convoluted and often difficult to follow, but at the same time truly fascinating and the recreation of time & era are brilliant.

For as far as I remember the stuff my high-school history teacher attempted to tell me, the political background of this film is accurate to the tiniest detail. It's also a very well made film, especially considering the low production values! The cinematography and decors are extremely stylish and the film also benefits from a splendid Ennio Morricone score.

The acting is great with Antonio Sabato (Seven Blood-Stained Orchids) and Anne Heywood (What Waits Below) bringing an amazing and plausible chemistry on screen. A beautiful movie, but certainly not for all tastes.

Summary Review: Classic of its kind

A gang of three murderers escape the police, terrorize a salesgirl in a roadside grocery store, then proceed to hide-out in a seemingly deserted farmhouse. They soon discover that a young girl, Lisa, and her paralyzed grandfather live there. The gang attempt some sleazy deeds, but Lisa shows how she can work an axe in self defence.

Even though this movie is EXTREMELY low-budget and is only around 60 minutes long, it is still another example of how a low-budget can help a movie. The acting isn't always the best, but Leslie Lee is considerably creepy as Lisa the axe murderess.

The movie doesn't really go anywhere, but it is a classic of its kind.

• UK 1999 Exploited VHS titled California Axe Massacre

The 1999 Exploited release under the title of California Axe Massacre  was passed back and forth between Duval and Mike Bor who apparently did not have a problem passing the film uncut.

However the DPP said the film would still be prosecutable as obscene as it was all those years ago. So one cut is necessary to make it legal.

It was listed as a video nasty in September 1984 and stayed on the list throughout the panic and so became one of the collectable DPP39s
