For the first time in the GTA series' history, commentators are falling over each other to lavish praise on the game. This has completely eclipsed the naysayers and detractors. The moral outcry has simply failed to materialise. But why?

A new Red Bull advert which makes light of the sinking of the Titanic has supposedly 'outraged' relatives of those who died in the tragedy.
The advert jokes that the ship might not have sunk had it been given wings by the drink, Red Bull.
Professional offence takers (thanks to Spiked for the term) at the Titanic Heritage Trust called the advert blatantly offensive .
The Advertising Standards Authority has also received 46 complaints about the cartoon advert.
The cartoon shows a crate of the drink - which advertisers say gives you wings - being winched onto an unidentified ship. The captain asks a dockhand what the drink is, and on hearing the beverage's catchphrase - that it gives you wings
he questions why a ship would ever need wings. The crate is then lowered from the ship, revealing that the boat in question is the Titanic. The captain dismisses the notion that a ship could need wings and walks off.
Trust founder Howard Nelson said he was considering complaining to advertising regulators. He claimed:
It is very offensive and just disrespectful. There is a difference between making a joke and this. I get jokes all the time about icebergs and the like, taking the mick out of my interest in the Titanic, but that is banter. This is blatantly
offensive because it is taking the mick out of the people who have passed away.

Red Bull has refused to pull the cartoon ad featuring the Titanic arguing that the tragedy was so great that it has now made its way
into our language and stressing the irony of its advertisement.
In a statement sent to BeverageDaily.com Red Bull insisted that the advert was not being pulled.
The tragedy of the Titanic was so great that it has now made its way into our language. When people say that something is like 'like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic' they are not making little of those who lost their lives in
1912.
When we say that 'Nero fiddled while Rome burned' we are not making little of those who died in 64 AD. Our ironic advertisement points to an arrogant ship's captain who thought he knew everything, not the passengers who suffered.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has now received 100+ complaints about the advert.

Gender extremists set to protest at an XBIZ adult industry conference in London

Gender extremists say they will protest at a three-day conference for adult website operators which began in London today, with talks including State of the Industry: The War on Porn .
The US adult trade group and conference organiser, XBIZ, said the debate would look at the Government's plans.
The extremists from London Feminist Network and Object will wear overalls and masks alluding to their view that the adult industry is toxic . Julia Long from the London Feminist Network said:
At the very moment we are having a national debate on the harms of pornography, and not least the enormous amount of porn in teenagers' and children's lives, XBIZ is holding sessions specifically aimed at combating any attempts to curb
access to internet pornography. Pornographers don't care about the damage their industry does. Their only concern is profit.
Industry lawyer Myles Jackman told the conference website:
Successive governments have mounted a sustained campaign against the UK porn industry and now's the time to fight back.

If the Devil invented a game...it would be GTA V

If the Devil had his own bible, it would probably take the form of a computer game. It would be sly and witty, enjoyable and slick. It would start with small, almost funny misdeeds.
It would offer the player the joys of money, successful violence and easy, responsibility-free sex. There would be drugs which didn't fry your brain or burn holes in your nose.
You would be made to feel brave, while not actually needing to be. None of your pleasures would be paid for in coin, pain or grief. Hell hound: An image from the heavily hyped and violence-filled new computer game Grand Theft Auto V
Everyone else in the game would be disposable and forgettable. And it would contain one big lie. You would come out at the end happy and unharmed, and wanting more.
As I understand it, this is roughly what happens in the new, much-praised Grand Theft Auto V.

Plymouth Council to draw up guidelines to censor images on council property that supposedly 'sexualise' children

Images that supposedly sexualise children should be removed from the streets of Plymouth, say city councillors. They
backed a move by Labour councillor Kate Taylor to draw up guidelines to restrict what images can be displayed on council property. Taylor claimed without offering any evidence:
Power and control over the female body, and pressure on boys to conform to a hyper-masculine ideal, are having a real and damaging effect on our day-to-day lives.
We as a single authority have little control over the use of sexualised advertising used by companies and businesses across the country.
But we do have an opportunity to send the message the Plymouth City Council is doing whatever it can to make sure our children grow up loving themselves for who they are.
Nicky Williams, the Cabinet member for children and young people, said that although the council could not control advertisers, it could control images on display in Plymouth's public places and council-owned buildings.
Councillors instructed chief executive Tracey Lee to draw up guidelines for the use of such imagery.

And see of course the Guardian encroaching on the tabloids: Grand Theft Auto 5 under fire for graphic
torture scene
from theguardian.com

The Daily Mirror has a bit of fun with the new Grand Theft Auto V and spouts:
In the 18-rated violent crime game's most shocking scene yet, the player is instructed to pull out his victim's teeth with a pair of pliers
A brutal scene in a new computer game where players carry out gruesome torture techniques has been condemned by teachers.
Today sees the official release of Grand Theft Auto 5, one of the most highly-anticipated games of all time.
In a torture scene in the PEGI 18-rated crime game, the player is instructed to pull out a victim's teeth with a pair of pliers. Gamers then pour a flammable liquid over a victim tied to a chair. Players then smash the victim's kneecap with a monkey wrench
and give him electric shocks using spark plugs as he pleads for mercy.
Alison Sherratt, president of the Lecturers and Teachers Association was suitable 'outraged':
Up until now we've been warning of the dangers of children seeing these games but saying it's the parents responsibility to keep children away from these video games. But this scene takes things a step too far and the games makers need
to consider what they are producing.
Children in our playgrounds are displaying more violence and we have conducted polls and found they are viewing games like GTA. My concern is that little brother or sister walk in to the room and start watching something like this because
an older brother is playing it. They don't understand the difference between reality and fiction because it's so awfully graphic and real. and they do copy it. They imitate what they see and this scene is taking it way too far.
Labour MP Keith Vaz says he is astonished by the torture scene in GTA 5 and contributed a sound bite:.
I am astonished at the level of violence depicted in this game.
It is worrying that this type of content could be accessed by young people, particularly considering the previous links to real-life violence. It is important that the video game industry takes steps to fully inform the public about the
level of extreme content. Responsibility also lies with parents to ensure that their children do not access these types of games until it is appropriate.

From the Guardian
I'm probably not alone among parents in dreading the likely question: Why has she done this?
That's the more troubling aspect of Wrecking Ball. Maybe Cyrus has done this entirely of her own voliition. And it is certainly not my place, as a 44-year-old man, to pronounce on how 20-year-old women should display their sexuality. But
whatever her reasons for making the video, Cyrus does send a message: that the best way for young women to be noticed is to sexually objectify themselves. And, in this case -- sadly -- it seems to have worked.
It's now five past noon, and Wrecking Ball has had 14,453,182 views on YouTube. It's added more than a million since I started writing this piece.
Update: Recommended by the French TV censor

from news.sky.com
Music videos by Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears have been deemed too explicit for daytime television in France. The country's broadcast watchdog has told channels to only show Cyrus' video for Wrecking Ball and Spears' video for Work Bitch
after 10pm.
In a statement, the Conseil Superieur de l'Audiovisuel (CSA) watchdog said some channels were showing them in the daytime and without any parental guidance warnings. The Cyrus video, which mostly features the young pop star writhing around naked, is too
sexually explicit, it says. And Spears' video, which shows her in bondage gear, shows a sadomachistic universe representing women in a way that risks shocking many viewers .

A few feminists, outside 19 Tesco stores, call for lads' mags to be banned

Gender extremists from Object and UK Feminista organised a series of protests outside Tesco stores calling on them to ban lads' mags.
19 Tesco scores around the country saw small gatherings of protestors at Manchester, London, Portsmouth and Glasgow
The feminist groups claim that lads' mags:
Fuel sexist behaviours and attitudes underpinning violence against women. Tesco would never allow "girlie calendars" on their office walls. Why are they choosing to stock degrading, pornographic lads mags on their shelves?
Kat Banyard, the founder of UK Feminista, said:
As long as Tesco sells lads mags like Nuts and Zoo its claims of being a responsible corporate citizen are a farce.
The No More Page 3 campaign founder Lucy Holmes said:
Protests are a great way of engaging with the public about the issue.
But the groups seem to be largely failing to attract much in the way of engagement. For instance the Daily Mail, well known for getting onboard moralist bandwagons, itself publishes material just a little too close to lads' mags content for comfort, so
has been generally negative about the Feminsta campaign. Similarly the lads' mags material is also a little close to sexy celebrity material that is so widely enjoyed by the general public, so the campaigners don't seem to be attracting wide public
engagement with their cause.

Tesco pressurise lads' mags into using less sexy covers
|
See article
from theguardian.com
|
Zoo, Nuts and Front have agreed to self censor their front covers as demanded by Tesco. The supermarket has been lobbied by anti-sex miserablists. The new censorship code will apply only to the magazines' covers.
Highly explicit front covers of lads' mags may be a thing of the past, Tesco said. Zoo, Nuts and Front have agreed to make their covers more modest , the retailer said, meaning no more nudity, with less salacious coverlines and a more
conservative feel.
|
|
Latest Issue of Nuts
|
In addition to demanding toned-down covers, the store said Nuts, Zoo, Front and Bizarre would now be sold only to customers over 18, to reassure parents who do not want their children to be able to purchase these titles , and the magazines will be
displayed at the back of sales racks, where their covers will be obscured by other magazines.
Of course the censorship campaigners dismissed the move as a half-measure that doesn't address the harm of these publications .
Kat Banyard, founder of UK Feminista, one of two groups behind the Lose the Lad Mags campaign , said that lobbying to have the titles removed from shelves altogether would continue, because they are deeply harmful. They fuel sexist behaviours which
underpin violence against women.
Nuts, which is published by IPC Media, said it had introduced new covers ... which have a more conservative tone several weeks ago, adding: We are delighted with our readers' response and this week's issue is our biggest selling since February.
While previous issues have shown women fully topless with their nipples covered by headlines or their hands or hair, and promising the boobiest shoot ever or big-boobed brunettes , recent editions of Nuts feature models in less highly
sexualised poses, wearing slightly more modest lingerie.

A letter from Edie Lamort, feminist and sexual freedom activist, to the Co-operative Group about their latest censorship decision:
...As a woman I find the current trend towards more puritan values very disturbing. Lobby groups such as UK Feminista and Object represent the more extreme and fanatical end of this trend and I am very disappointed that the Co-op has buckled under
pressure from them. With the proposed censoring of the Internet last week and the general moral panic at the moment about sexualisation this is another retrograde step. It is almost like we are experiencing a sexual counter-revolution.
I am worried about this overall message that demonises the female body and buys into centuries old patriarchal tradition that female flesh is sinful and corrupting. It is this mentality that spurred the Witch Trials of the 16th Century and in more recent
times has cast a veil of silence over sexual abuse. It leads to an environment where people are made to feel shame about a perfectly natural urge leading to anger and frustration rather than self-awareness and understanding.

Sexcereal

A new muesli called Sexcereal is about to be unleashed on Britain. The maker claims that Just three tablespoonfuls will increase your libido.
Ann Widdecome writes:
It is almost certainly nonsense as in the words of one nutritionist: There is no scientific evidence that any food or nutritional substance can have an impact on your sex drive. But that is not the issue. It is yet another example
of the sexualisation of even the most innocent aspect of our lives
Whether this cereal lives up to its claims or not, it is yet another example of the sexualisation of even the most innocent aspect of our lives, of the use of sex in advertising even the most basic products and of the underlying assumption
that sex is everybody's preoccupation every minute of the day even when flying out of the door to catch the bus for work or dropping the children off at the school gates.
Let it languish on the shelves. It is reported to have been a big hit in the United States so let Brits smile incredulously and pityingly and reach for the Weetabix.

Complaints about cleft lip makeup for baddie in the Lone Ranger
|
See article
from independent.co.uk
|
Cleft palate support groups have hit out at Disney's new summer film The Lone Ranger , amid accusations that the villain was given a birth defect to make him look more evil .
Disney's promotional material for the film said of William Fichtner's character Butch Cavendish: Cavendish is a ruthless outlaw whose terribly scarred face is a perfect reflection of the bottomless pit that passes for his soul. Fichtner told entertainment
reporters that his broken nose and cleft lip made it easier to slip into his role, and meant he didn't need to act any more evil because it was obvious from his face.
The Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) issued a statement saying Disney was cashing in on prejudice , and urged its members to lodge complaints with the film's producers.
Even the official set of The Lone Ranger Lego toys features a small Butch Cavendish with a very prominent cleft lip. In an open letter to executives at Lego, a member of the US community website babycenter wrote: You make toys for children
and these toys (often wonderfully) impact how they perceive or create the world.
CLAPA said Disney was sending out:
A deeply harmful message that will impact the 90,000 people that were born with a cleft in the UK as well as others worldwide. What message does this send to movie-goers about people with a cleft or anyone with a visible difference? What
message does it send to those who have a cleft themselves about how they are seen by society?
Across the Atlantic, the Toronto Star reported Rachel Mancuso, who runs the website cleftsmile.org, as saying she had received around 1,000 emails a day from people complaining about the film. She told the Star: As a parent and educator, I'm having
a hard time understanding why they had to create a bad guy and slap on the number one birth defect.

The Guardian introduces an article from Zoe Williams:
The pornification of Britain's high streets: why enough is enough
Magazines with naked women on the cover sit next to kids' comics in newsagents. Scantily clad models are draped across the nation's billboards. We asked readers to send photos showing how sexual images have invaded the high street
Of course the reality is that the advert censor has been banning anything remotely sexy on billboards and the Guardian gender extremists have scoured the country for probably one example that has escaped the clutches of the censors is in a shop window
rather than a billboard anyway.
And then of course there is the fundamental issue that society seems to be surviving pretty well with crime generally on the decrease. Definitely infinitely better than any society that lets bullies and moralists censor the very existence of sexuality
from society.

The Sun's Page 3 is debated in the Welsh Assembly

The issue of the Sun's Page 3 has been debated in the Welsh Assembly.
Labour member Rebecca Evans bizarrely claimed during the debate that The Sun is one of the only places left where soft pornography is accepted. She said that she supports the anti Page 3 campaign and called upon the Sun newspaper to drop the feature
and emphasised that half naked women just aren't news.
Labour member Joyce Watson said that being opposed to page three is a no-brainer . She added that women are seen as desirable or maternal and still judged by appearances instead of achievements.
Plaid Cymru member Lindsay Whittle asked menacingly : is page three suitable for families to see in their own homes?
However Janet Finch-Saunders of the Conservative party said that there must be a demand for page three as it still exists and some women feel proud to show their bodies.

Mediasnoops writes an open letter to Tesco on the occasion of a meeting with the Lose The Lads' Mags campaign
|
See open letter
from mediasnoops2.wordpress.com
|
Dear Tesco,
Tomorrow you are going to sit down and meet with Lose The Lads Mags who want you to stop selling lads magazines because they find them sexist, degrading and offensive.
The arguments they put forward as to why you should stop selling these magazines is that they objectify women and cause sexual harassment to female customers and to your staff who do not wish to see magazines which show women as sex
objects .
They deny they are calling for lads mags to be banned but if you stop selling these magazines based on their objections you will be banning them.
The justifications for you banning these magazines is based on the argument that there are people who do not wish to see these magazines whilst they are doing their shopping and that your female staff members do not wish to have to handle
these magazines or sell them to customers.
Essentially what Lose The Lads Mags are saying is that because some customers do not like lads mags and do not wish to see them in your store other customers should be stopped from buying them.
And these magazines can be covered up and put on the top shelf so those customers who are offended by them do not have to see them. But what Lose The Lads Mags are calling for is for them to withdrawn from sale completely.
As for the arguments over staff not wishing to handle or sell lads mags to customers the question should be asked as to since when supermarket employees have ever had the right to veto what the customers of the store they work in should
and should not be allowed to purchase.
And if we are going to ban lads mags from supermarkets because some members of staff object to them what's to stop other staff members objecting to the sale of other products they find objectionable such as meat, alcohol, cigarettes or
lottery ticket. Maybe we should ban those things too?
The arguments that these magazines are harmful because they make men see women as nothing more than sex objects and therefore cause men to act sexually violently towards women are spurious at best. It suggests that men are brainless drones
who mindlessly lap up whatever they see and will be turned into crazed violent sex beasts by seeing pictures of women with little or no clothing on.
Lose The Lads Mags, Object and UK Feminista believe that the very sight of a woman's naked body on the front of a magazine causes men to turn into salivating sex monsters who will defile the first woman they come into contact with.
I urge you to seriously ask yourself whether the objections of a minority of self appointed moral puritans who masquerade as feminists should dictate what you sell and what your customers can and cannot purchase in your stores.
You seriously need to consider whether you are going to stand up for consumer choice or whether you are going to remove the choice of consumers based on the protests and objections of a group of puritans who represent very few people.
Update: Not much reported about the meeting
14th July 2013. From feminista

Feminista just reported that they spoke to Tesco about their campaign and that a decision would be made about Lads' Mags in Tesco in a few weeks.
