A criminal mastermind (Jack Taylor, Female Vampire) deploys poison gas and a beautiful whip-wielding assassin (Beni Cardoso) in a plot to steal government secrets in The Vengeance of Dr Mabuse (Dr. M schlägt zu). But his elaborate schemes risk unraveling when a small-town inspector (Fred Williams) stumbles into the scene. An unauthorized entry in the Dr. Mabuse cycle, the film makes no reference to Norbert Jacquess clairvoyant criminal (the M-word is carefully avoided). Instead, director Jess Franco used the project as a chance to revisit his own sci-fi thrillers (The Awful Dr. Orlof, The Diabolical Dr. Z). Fold in a disfigured henchman (Rocha), a striptease dancer (Ewa Strömberg, Vampyros Lesbos), and wrap it all in a feverish jazz score, and the result is a spicy cinematic melange that could only have been concocted in the demented mind of Jess Franco.

Returning home with her travelling theatre troupe, actress Camille (Jeanne Balibar, Les misérables) finds the affections of her director lover Ugo (Sergio Castellitto, Conclave) have waned after he takes an interest in Dominique (Hélčne de Fougerolles, Innocence), a vivacious student helping him search for an infamous missing play. In a bid to make him jealous, Camille reunites with her former lover Pierre (Jacques Bonnaffé, Prénom Carmen), now happily married to Sonia (Marianne Basler, Midnight in Paris), and a farce-like series of love triangles ensue. Theatrically exploring attraction, jealousy, and every emotion in between, Jacques Rivettes quick-witted and zesty romantic drama turns a satirical lens on the citys intelligentsia - for whom Paris will always be their home - to ask whether even they know what love is all about.

It wasnt really the first film of its kind, but the western allItaliana -- or 'spaghetti Western' -- was never the same again after Sergio Leones groundbreaking A Fistful of Dollars , starring Clint Eastwood in the classic role that made him an international icon.

A nameless stranger (Eastwood) rides into the Mexican border town of San Miguel and quickly finds himself in the middle of a bloody battle for power between two rival families, the Baxters and the Rojos. Cannily realising theres money to be made from playing each side against the other, the Man with No Name soon finds himself caught in the crossfire as the body count escalates, his only chance of escape a standoff against the Rojos mercilessly cruel leader, Ramón (Gian Maria Volonté).

The BBFC explained their ban:

  • A 9 year old boy kills his foster family one by one, including the realistic drowning of his 3 year old sister. It was argued that this was a fantasy horror film and not to be taken literally, but three distinguished child psychiatrists advised us that the video was sufficiently realistic to have a dangerous impact on a significant proportion of vulnerable children.

Promotional Material

An icon of the Hong Kong New Wave and mentor to Wong Kar-wai, Patrick Tam worked with icons including Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love), Leslie Cheung (Days of Being Wild), Kenny Bee (Armour of God) and others in these two inimitable classics. In Nomad two couples, equal parts rich and working class, bond and experience the frolics of youth. The arrival of a Red Army deserter brings violence and disruption prompting incredible plot twists and inspired set-pieces.

My Heart is That Eternal Rose finds Tam in the more familiar Heroic Bloodshed genre. A young couple are torn apart by a botched Triad job that forces Rick to relocate to the Philippines and Lap to become a gangster's moll. Six years later they meet again but their reunion only reignites the danger that drove them apart.

Stunningly shot by David Chung (Once Upon a Time in China) and Christopher Doyle (Chungking Express) both films are newly restored and made available on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.
