Anthony Perkins builds upon his legendary status as cinema's seminal psycho in Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson's classic horror novella 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' and Jack the Ripper's real-life reign of terror over Victorian London. When his experiments into a powerful new anaesthetic go hideously awry, respected physician Dr Jekyll (Perkins) takes off into the night, casting aside the shackles of upper-class propriety as he disappears into the shadowy decadent demimonde of Whitechapel in pursuit of sensual pleasures under the guise of 'Mr Hyde'. As his wife Elisabeth (Glynis Barber) passes her time in charitable work, rehabilitating the district's fallen women, Hyde is drawn into an escalating cycle of lust and murder that seems to know no bounds. Produced by exploitation maestro Harry Alan Towers (The Face of Fu Manchu, Count Dracula) and directed with a hallucinogenic intensity by Gérard Kikoïne (Lady Libertine, Buried Alive), Edge of Sanity plunges the viewer into a labyrinth of depravity from which there is no escape.

Thanks to Jon who noted that his UK 4K Blu-ray version of the original Top Gun was in fact cut for a single use of strong language. With the word 'fuck' being replaced by 'shit' (see further details below). As best as I can work out so far, the cuts history seems to be as follows:

The BBFC reduced this rating to 12 from 2004.

The cut US Version seems to have been used for worldwide 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases.

Shopping: A Fistful of Dollars...

1964 Italy/Spain/West Germany action western drama by Sergio Leone, once cut in the US and UK, just released on US 4K Blu-ray

A Fistful of Dollars is a 1964 Italy/Spain/West Germany action western drama by Sergio Leone
Starring Clint Eastwood, Gian Maria Volontè, (Italian, English version) and Marianne Koch BBFC link 2020 IMDb

Originally cut in the US for an 'M' rated theatrical release. The US cut version was further cut by the BBFC for an X (16) rated 1967 cinema release and it seems the same version was released again in 1981 for an 'AA' rated cinema re-release.

A slightly extended UK Theatrical version was released on pre-cert VHS in 1983 and 15 rated VHS in 1987. Uncut and 15 rated in the UK since 1999.

Meanwhile in the US the film was released uncut and MPAA Unrated on 1988 VHS. An R rating was obtained for the uncut version in 1994 and applies to all subsequent releases.

The original British theatrical release had about 4 minutes cut by the BBFC. Many closeup shots of bloodied faces and bodies (including the body of Chico) were removed, as well as a shot of Ramon dripping blood from his mouth. The main cuts, however, were to the beating up of Eastwood, which lost a hand stomping scene, and extensive cuts to the assault on the Baxters' house which was cut to shorten the overall sequence by removing all shots of men on fire, and the shooting of Consuela Baxter. (The cut version removes the shot of her falling backwards.) The 1999 MGM video and DVD releases are fully uncut and the same as the USA DVD release.

Summary Notes

Drifter gunman Joe (Clint Eastwood) arrives in the Mexican village of San Miguel at the border of the United States of America, and befriends the owner of the local bar, Silvanito. Joe discovers that the town is dominated by two gangster lords: John Baxter (Wolfgang Lukschy) and the cruel Ramón Rojo (Gian Maria Volontè). When Joe kills four men of Baxter's gang, he is hired by Ramón's brother Esteban Rojo (Sieghardt Rupp) to join their gang. However, Joe decides to work for both sides, playing one side against the other.

US: Uncut and MPAA R rated for:

Promotional Material

The film that started it all...the genre of "spaghetti western" was born, "The Man with No Name" was introduced and the iconic talents of star Clint Eastwood (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, High Plains Drifter), director Sergio Leone (For a Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dynamite) and composer Ennio Morricone (Navajo Joe, Death Rides a Horse) were launched. An instant international phenomenon, this hard-hitting epic stunned audiences with its violence, gritty realism and tongue-in-cheek humor. A lean, cold-eyed, cobra-quick gunfighter (Eastwood) arrives in a grim and dusty border town where two rival bands of smugglers terrorize the impoverished citizens. Though he receives lucrative offers of employment from each gang, his loyalty cannot be bought. He accepts both jobs...and sets in motion a deadly plan to destroy the criminals, pitting one against the other in a series of brilliantly orchestrated setups, showdowns and deadly confrontations. Co-starring Marianne Koch (Night People, The Devil's General) and Gian Maria Volontè (Face to Face, Lucky Luciano), A Fistful of Dollars is the western taken to the extreme.

Promotional Material

When former Shaw Brothers executive Raymond Chow founded rival studio Golden Harvest in 1970, he quickly teamed up with "Jimmy" Wang Yu -- Hong Kong's first kung fu superstar and formerly Shaw's biggest box office draw. Bringing over his peerless talent for taking on all foes with one hand tied behind his back, Wang wrote, directed and played the title role in one of his most unmissable kickass classics. From the legendary star of One-Armed Swordsman and The Chinese Boxer comes... One-Armed Boxer !

Yu Tian Long (Wang) is the best fighter to come out of his local martial arts school, but when he crosses the ruthless leader of a local crime syndicate, the big boss' brutal bevy of deadly killers make mincemeat out of the school and everyone inside. Now the only survivor of the massacre, and short of one appendage, Yu is gifted a powerful elixir that promises to give him the strength to take swift revenge on the army of assassins, each representing the most lethal forms of fighting from across the Eastern hemisphere.

Proving once and for all that you only need five fingers of death to get the job done, Wang would later reprise his role in the infamous sequel Master of the Flying Guillotine , but it's the dementedly inventive original where he's arguably at the height of his powers.

Cannibal Holocaust...

BBFC reaffirm animal cruelty cuts

Link Here5th June 2022
Cannibal Holocaust is a 1979 Italian adventure by Ruggero Deodato.
With Robert Kerman, Francesca Ciardi and Perry Pirkanen. Melon Farmers link  BBFC link 2020  IMDb
Famously banned in the UK as a Video Nasty in 1983. Unbanned for the heavily cut 2001 DVD. The cuts were reduced to animal violence only for 2011 DVD. Deodato produced a new edit in 2011 to more tidily remove the animal violence. Uncut in the US and Italy
The BBFC have reconfirmed its animal cruelty cuts to Cannibal Holocaust commenting:

This work required a compulsory cut to a scene of animal cruelty.

The film had been submitted by 88 Films.

Presumably these are the same cuts as the previous submission in 2011 when the BBFC cut a 15s scene of a coatimundi being killed.

Note that all the old cuts for violence were waived for that 2011 submission.

While the mighty Shaw Brothers were dominating the Hong Kong martial arts scene with hard-hitting features like THE CHINESE BOXER and dazzling us with an aesthetic brilliance found in productions such as LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA or THE SHAOLIN DISCIPLES, writer and star JACKIE CHAN and director Chen Chi-Hwa were cutting across much of the pomposity associated with many of these types of films and offering something much more akin to parody with HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU

Accident-prone Jiang (Chan) dreams of learning Kung Fu from a master, but when he takes employment as a bodyguard at a shady mansion, he stumbles upon an evil witch and finds himself in the middle of an uncertain future.

Funny, inventive and clever, HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU provides light-hearted action, some bonkers scenarios and of course, Chan's patented style of fun and fury.

Cut by the BBFC for varying amounts for an 18 rating between 1990 and 1999. Uncut and 18 rated for 2008 DVD but this was never released. Formally uncut and BBFC 18 rated for 2022 Blu-ray. Uncut and MPAA NC-17 rated in the US.
UK: Passed 18 uncut for sexual violence, strong real sex, nudity:
  • 2022 Sony/Criterion Collection (RB) Blu-ray at UK Amazon #ad released on 25th July 2022

The BBFC agreed to an uncut 18 rated DVD release in 2008 but the release was cancelled. The BBFC commented in 2008 about the 3 cuts to be waived:

  • Probably the most difficult scene was the one featuring a man assaulting a woman with live chickens. However, a careful viewing of the scene suggested that the handling of the chickens, although rough, was no stronger than other scenes of animals being manhandled that had been passed in other films. Furthermore, although the chickens were killed, the killing was quick and clean and therefore not in breach of BBFC policy on animal cruelty.
  • The scene showing a man masturbating and injecting semen into a woman's vagina was grotesque and repulsive, rather than erotic. Although the Board had previously expressed concerns about the non-consensual nature of the scene, the datedness of the film and the lack of credibility of the scene, argued against intervention. With regard to the sexual violence in the scene, the Board's conclusion was that the scene was so over-the-top and so divorced from reality, that the likely response was disgust, shock and horror, rather than arousal.
  • The brief explicit fellatio could be justified by the wider context of the film, in that the whole purpose of the film was to shock, disgust and amuse (in a blackly comic fashion), rather than to arouse, and the explicitness of the image was important in creating the film's effect.

The BBFC's ratings info from 2022 reads:

nudity : There is focus on a man's dilating anus, in close-up detail. There is wider full nudity.

sex : There is a scene of unsimulated fellatio between a fictional mother and son. There are other strong sex scenes, as well as references to ejaculation, masturbation and troilism. A man's semen is seen, in close-up detail.

sexual violence and sexual threat : A man rapes a woman, while daubing her in chicken blood. After masturbating over her, a man artificially inseminates an unconscious female prisoner. A man exposes himself to schoolgirls.

other issues: In unsimulated footage, a woman puts dog excrement in her mouth. There is infrequent very strong language ('c**t'), regular strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker') and discriminatory terms such as 'fag', 'dyke' and 'queen'. A chicken is killed on-screen. Threat, gore and implied violence are strong. There is brief drug misuse.

Promotional Material

When a pair of sociopaths (MINK STOLE and DAVID LOCHARY) with a habit of kidnapping women in order to impregnate them attempt to challenge her title, Divine resolves to show them and the world the true meaning of the word filthy. Incest, cannibalism, shrimping, and film history's most legendary gross-out ending--Waters and his merry band of Dreamlanders leave no taboo unsmashed in this gleefully subversive ode to outsiderhood, in which camp spectacle and pitch-black satire are wielded in an all-out assault on respectability.

Before becoming known for their over-the-top action spectacles, Cannon Films dabbled in the early 80s slasher craze, producing a handful of original slice n' dice classics, two of which are presented here on 4K UHD for the first time, from Vinegar Syndrome!

SCHIZOID

Pieter Fales is a renowned psychiatrist who is unable to reconcile his relationship with his teenage daughter, Alison. Julie, one of Pieter's patients, is a successful advice columnist in the midst of a messy divorce, who has also started receiving threatening letters. When a black clad, scissors wielding killer begins murdering people in Julie's life, she begins to suspect that her unknown writer and this mystery assailant might be one and the same...

Taking strong stylistic cues from the giallo genre, director David Paulsen's ( Savage Weekend ) SCHIZOID , is a delirious whodunit headlined by cult film superstar, Klaus Kinski ( Nosferatu the Vampyre ), alongside Donna Wilkes ( Angel ), Marianna Hill ( Messiah of Evil ), and an early appearance from Christopher Lloyd ( Back to the Future ), all amplified with a throbbing electronic score by Craig Huxley and presented here from a stunning new 4K restoration!

When Susan was a little girl, she rejected the Valentine of a lovestruck classmate. Decades later, she's come to the hospital for a routine medical examination. But when her x-rays seem to show something unusual, Susan finds herself trapped in a bizarre medical nightmare, made all the worse as her vengeful childhood valentine, disguised among the hospital staff, begins murdering everyone in his path as a means of proving his undying 'romantic' obsession...

With its exceptionally colorful cinematography by Nicholas Josef von Sternberg ( Slaughterhouse Rock ) and otherworldly sense of surrealism, trailblazing Israeli filmmaker Boaz Davidson's ( The Last American Virgin ) sole foray into horror cinema, X-RAY (aka Hospital Massacre ) is a slasher like no other and has been freshly restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative, allowing its one-of-a-kind weirdness to be experienced as never before.

THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971) Meet Doctor Phibes: a one-time concert musician who's now an all-time crazed murderer. In this clever, crypt-kicking classic, horrormeister Vincent Price (The Raven, The Last Man on Earth) plays a diabolical doc seeking the ultimate in revenge with precision creepiness and surgical wit. Watch Dr. Phibes live up to his promise: "Nine killed her, nine shall die, nine eternies in doom!" After a team of surgeons botch his beloved wife's surgery, leaving her for dead, the emotionally distraught Dr. Phibes creatively concocts a fatal prescription for revenge. Using the Good Book as his guide, Phibes unleashes a score of old testament atrocities--from a plague of locusts to an attack of rats--on his enemies that climax in what may be one of the eeriest endings on screen record! Robert Fuest (And Soon the Darkness) directed this darkly comic shocker that features Joseph Cotten (Baron Blood), Hugh Griffith (So Evil My Love), Terry-Thomas (The Green Man) and Virginia North (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) as the doc's evil assistant Vulnavia.

DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN (1972) Flesh Crawls! Blood Curdles! Phibes Lives! This sequel to The Abominable Dr. Phibes again features Vincent Price (Scream and Scream Again, House of the Long Shadows) as one of his most perfect horror villains in his long list of evil-doers. The eminent Dr. Phibes awakens from a decade of suspended animation and heads to Egypt with his mute aide-de-camp Vulnavia and the corpse of his dead wife. To resurrect his spouse, Phibes gets up to his usual, diabolical tricks: cleverly murdering people in strange and heinous ways to invoke a magical incantation. But once he is in the tomb of the dead Pharaohs, the good doctor discovers that his pursuit of an afterlife may be foiled by his nemesis who wants to end the reign of this sadistic surgeon of gore. Robert Fuest (The Devil's Rain) directed this spine-tingling romp that features Robert Quarry (Madhouse), Peter Jeffrey (Ring of Bright Water), Fiona Lewis (Tintorera) and Hugh Griffith (Cry of the Banshee), with guest stars Peter Cushing (The Skull), Beryl Reid (The Killing of Sister George) and Terry-Thomas (Danger: Diabolik).

Over a long and wide-ranging career, director Enzo G. Castellari (Keoma, The Inglorious Bastards) helmed some of the most infamous of all the poliziotteschi -- the gritty, action-packed crime films that proliferated in Italy throughout the 70s. Buckle up for a heart-stopping thrill ride through the seedy underbelly of Italian society in two of his most celebrated thrillers! In 1976's The Big Racket, Inspector Nico Palmieri (Fabio Testi, What Have You Done to Solange?) is hot on the heels of a gang of ruthless racketeers. Realizing he's not going to get anywhere within the confines of the law, Nico recruits a crack squad of civilians to dole out their own brand of justice.

Then, in 1977's The Heroin Busters, rule-flouting cop Fabio (Testi) goes deep undercover, chasing a globe-trotting ring of drug-smugglers suspected to be operating out of Rome. But can he and Mike Hamilton (David Hemmings, Deep Red), an Interpol agent with a hair-trigger temper, stay one step ahead of the criminals long enough to bring them down from the inside?

Featuring death-defying stunts, explosive shoot-outs and a pair of addictive, toe-tapping soundtracks courtesy of the De Angelis brothers (Torso) and legendary prog rock group Goblin (Suspiria), these two films represent the crème de la crème of the Italian crime thriller, both making their high definition debuts with stunning new restorations in this feature-packed box set from Arrow!

Taking its name from the ironic moniker for late 1960s and '70s New York, Fun City Editions is a new boutique label focused on reissues of maverick repertory cinema and music that can best be described as works that exist "outside of their time." Spanning an array of genres, artists and countries, but with a unifying focus on forgotten and overlooked treasures, each Fun City release, be it a Blu-ray or vinyl LP, will present new restorations and comprehensive extras which contextualize and illuminate the artistic and historic value of the piece. Vinegar Syndrome's sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Cult favorite Patti D'Arbanville (Andy Warhol's Flesh, Big Wednesday and Rancho Deluxe) essays the title role in Bilitis, the directorial debut of photographer David Hamilton. Based on the erotic nineteenth century poetry of Pierre Louÿs, the film's script was co-written by filmmaker and novelist Catherine Breillat (A Real Young Girl and Fat Girl). Spending the summer in the French countryside with elegant and beautiful family friend Barbara (Mona Kristensen), young Bilitis comes of age and learns valuable--if sometimes painful--lessons about intimacy, romance and love. D'Arbanville, who had been part of Warhol's Factory and was the inspiration for some of Cat Stevens' most beloved songs, effectively plays the sheltered young woman who becomes steadily wiser as the story progresses. The film is considerably elevated by the sumptuous score by famed French composer Francis Lai (Love Story and A Man and a Woman), which became a worldwide best-selling record. Hamilton's trademark soft focus photographic style is faithfully rendered on film by the cinematography of Bernard Daillencourt (Walerian Borowczyk's Immoral Tales, La Marge and The Beast). Bilitis has been richly restored in 4K, from the original camera negative, for this first-ever North American Blu-ray edition.

    Shopping: Mardi Gras Massacre...

1978 US video nasty by Jack Weis set for UK Blu-ray release on 27th June 2022

Mardi Gras Massacre is a 1978 US horror by Jack Weis.
With Curt Dawson, Gwen Arment and William Metzo. Melon Farmers link BBFC link 2020 IMDb

Banned as a video nasty in 1983. Uncut and BBFC 18 rated since 2022 Blu-ray. Uncut and MPAA R rated in the US.

    Summary Review: Cheese and sleaze!

Not exactly a straight slasher as many believe but it's surely as cheesy, and unintentionally funny as any slasher from the 80's.

Mardi Gras Massacre could be considered as a toned down exploitation low budget. The plot asks for brutality, violence, sleaze but the truth is that the execution of the idea isn't as half as good as it should.

The ritual method is repeated in all the death scenes. So we don't get originality or probably there wasn't enough budget to at least create three different gore scenes. It's okay but even ultra low budget slashers have at least two different killing methods! Anyways, Mardi Gras Massacre has generated some kind of cult over the years but sincerely, this isn't a must see. The movie should only be watched by b-movie lovers or morbid fans of low budget cheese and sleaze!

Brazil is a surrealistic nightmare vision of a "perfect" future where technology reigns supreme. Everyone is monitored by a secret government agency that forbids love to interfere with efficiency. Jonathan Pryce and Robert DeNiro star with Michael Palin in this chilling black comedy directed by former Monty Python member Terry Gilliam. When a daydreaming bureaucrat becomes unwittingly involved with an underground superhero and a beautiful mystery woman, he becomes the tragic victim of his own romantic illusions. Promotional Material

Francis Ford Coppola's master adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel chronicles the dramatic, and often violent, rise and fall of the Corleone family. Collected here on DVD for the first time is Coppola and Puzo's definitve, intended version of The Godfather saga in three distinct motion picture events: the Best Picture Oscar(r) winners THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER PART II, and the acclaimed THE GODFATHER CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE. It's not just essential cinema ... this is an offer you can't refuse.

    THE GODFATHER
Regarded as one of the best American films ever by the American Film Institute, Francis Ford Coppola's epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar(r)-winning* role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. The Godfather(tm) is a violent and chilling portrait of the Sicilian family's struggle to stay in power in a post-war America of corruption, deceit and betrayal. Coppola begins his legendary trilogy, masterfully balancing the story of the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award(r) nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972.

    THE GODFATHER PART II
In what is undeniably one of the best sequels ever made, Francis Ford Coppola continues his epic Godfather trilogy with this saga of two generations of power within the Corleone family. Coppola, working once again with the author Mario Puzo, crafts two interwoven stories that work as both prequel and sequel to the original. One shows the humble Sicilian beginnings and New York rise of a young Don Vito, now played in an Oscar(r)-winning* performance for Best Supporting Actor by Robert De Niro. The other shows the ascent of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don. Reassembling many of the cast members who helped make The Godfather(tm), Coppola has produced a movie of staggering magnitude and vision; the film received eleven Academy Awards(r) nominations, winning six including Best Picture of 1974.

MARIO PUZO'S THE GODFATHER CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE
Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of The Godfather: Part III, director/screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola brings a definitive new edit and restoration of the final film in his epic Godfather trilogy - Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), now in his 60s, seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia)... but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence. The film's meticulously restored picture and sound, under the supervision of American Zoetrope and Paramount Pictures, includes a new beginning and ending, as well as changes to scenes, shots, and music cues. The resulting project reflects author Mario Puzo and Coppola's original intentions of The Godfather: Part III, and delivers, in the words of Coppola,"a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II."

RoboCop, from Orion Pictures, marked director Paul Verhoeven's (Flesh + Blood) Hollywood debut and instantly became an enduring sci-fi/action classic when it landed in theaters in the summer of 1987. Verhoeven's peerlessly exciting and kinetic visuals were matched by a sharp script, iconic cast and exceptional special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Phil Tippett (The Empire Strikes Back).

The film takes place in Detroit in the not-too-distant future. Heroic cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai) is gunned down in the line of duty, only to be resurrected as RoboCop -- a cybernetic mix of spare human parts and Motor City steel, and the latest defense against crime designed by the all-powerful OCP Corporation. As RoboCop's memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen, Dressed To Kill) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above.

Unsurpassably thrilling, unexpectedly moving and unforgettably hilarious in equal measure, the future of law enforcement is back in a definitive 4K Blu-ray presentation packed with hours of bonus features and exclusive collectable packaging.

Taking its narrative cues from H.G. Wells' classic tale of mad science and jungle madness THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU and H.P. Lovecraft's THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH, director Sergio (TORSO) Martino's delirious and bizarre ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN (aka L'isola degli uomini pesce) is an Italian genre film like no other.

After surviving two harrowing nautical disasters, Lieutenant Claude de Ross washes up on a remote, uncharted tropical island along with a gaggle of similarly stranded escaped convicts. Soon, the cursed castaways are attacked by gruesome, slimy, scaly monsters and, after many of them meet their grisly ends, the rest - including the fortunate de Ross - are rescued by the cruel Rackham who immediately whisks them away to the jungle lair of Professor Ernest Marvin. Marvin, a disgraced American biologist, has tampered with genetics to create an army of fishmen, the very same creatures that attacked de Ross. Professor Marvin controls the creatures and has been using them to plunder a submerged city of gold that he believes to be the lost city of Atlantis. But the natives are restless and the fishmen are slowly, surely beginning to hatch their own plans. Will de Ross - along with the professor's comely daughter - find away to escape the island before its too late?

Starring iconic actors Joseph Cotton (CITIZEN KANE), Richard Johnson (THE HAUNTING, ZOMBIE) and comely Bond girl Barbara Bach (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN was originally released twice to American theaters in the early '80s via Roger Corman's New World pictures, first as SOMETHING WAITS IN THE DARK and later, in a radically altered version under the notorious and misleading title SCREAMERS. But Martino's magnum opus has rarely been seen on these shores the way in which he intended. Full Moon is thrilled to be presenting ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN here for the first time in North America in its completely uncut original form, gorgeously remastered in HD from the original 35mm negative.
