Bollox about Newcastle lap dancing bar being next to a gay area

marlborough crescent warehouseTrafalgar Leisure has applied for planning permission to turn an empty warehouse on Marlborough Crescent in the Newcastle city centre into a bar and lap-dancing venue.

The premises are close to several bars popular with the gay community.

Ward councillor Nick Forbes said he was planning to object to the latest application and would rule himself out of any debate as one of the members of the council's development control committee so that his objection could be made.

He said: My concern is that it would have a big negative impact on the gay village and I'm concerned that it would destroy the concept of a safe area by introducing all sorts of undesirables.

People in the area have until May 17 to make comments on the application, which will be considered by city council planners.

One resident has also raised concerns that families on their way to the Metro Radio Arena may have to walk past the club.

Bollox about Newcastle lap dancing bar being next to a gay area

marlborough crescent warehouseNutters against a planned lap-dancing club in Newcastle's gay quarter are celebrating victory.

Members of the city's gay community fought Trafalgar Leisure's application to turn an empty warehouse on Marlborough Crescent into a bar and lap-dancing venue.

City council officers granted planning permission for the club, despite receiving 16 letters of objection.

A Save Our Scene group set up on social networking site Facebook attracted more than 150 members and a protest website was also set up. Protesters claimed opening a strip club would damage the reputation of the area, popular with the city's gay community, as a safe place to party.

Now Trafalgar Leisure has said that due to the level of opposition the company will not pursue the idea of a lap-dancing club and will instead apply for a licence to run the premises as a bar.

Westgate councillor Nick Forbes, who campaigned against the plans, said: I'm delighted he has decided to reconsider. It shows he has been willing to listen to the community and think of alternative plans. I'm very grateful to everyone who put forward their views and I think it shows what we can achieve as a community if we work together.

Whingeing about plans for a new table dancing venue in Newcastle
purple door logo Plans for a new strip club in Newcastle have been submitted. For Your Eyes Only Ltd has applied for sexual entertainment and premises licences for what is currently The Den nightclub, in the basement of Baron House, opposite Central Station.

Bosses hope the Purple Door club could be open by April and create 100 jobs and would contribute to the nighttime economy.

However religious and PC moralists have inevitable opposed the idea. Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner and long standing anti-man politician, Vera Baird whinged:

I hope those who make the decision on this application reflect on the image and reputation of such places and how they can have a detrimental effect on the great work that has taken place over the last few years to make Newcastle a family friendly city.

Plans for the new club show its main area would include two stages - one of which would be almost 50ft long - 15 private booths, six VIP two-seat booths, 15 floor tables with seating for 64 customers, and 18 booth tables with seats.

Rev Dr Nicholas Buxton, a moralist and prudish priest at St John the Baptist church in Newcastle city centre said he would be objecting to the application - but not on the grounds of morality. Yeah yeah.... He spouted:

My objection will be on the basis that its somewhere that you first see on arrival into Newcastle. We're having a whole new station area, with a new hotel and a lot of positive developments that improve the city environment with a view to making a more positive first impression for people coming up here.

And you have to ask the question - is a strip club the sort of image that we want for city visitors?

I'm not suggesting a blanket ban on this industry, and this isn't a matter of being morally prudish ,... [BUT] ... it's about the perceptions and in this location I believe it would create a bad impression.
