The McPherson Tape is a 1989 USA Sci-Fi horror by Dean Alioto.
Starring Tommy Giavocchini, Patrick Kelley and Shirly McCalla. IMDb

Exists as an Original Version and a Director's Cut. The differences are marginal. The film made a little bit of an impact in the UFO community when a release of the film without credits convinced a few followers.

Promotional Material

A decade before THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT redefined the horror landscape, there was THE MCPHERSON TAPE . On October 8th, 1983, the McPherson family gathered together to celebrate the 5th birthday of Michelle, the littlest member of their household. Everything was captured on VHS by Michael McPherson and his new camcorder. Including the alien invasion. Shot for $6000 by first-time filmmaker Dean Alioto in 1989, this movie blends the production design of a Jaycees haunted house with a dead serious tone to forge a fun, hypnotic nightmare that upends the concept of reality. Due to a warehouse fire at the original distribution company, THE MCPHERSON TAPE was never legitimately released. AGFA + Bleeding Skull! are proud to present the world home video premiere of this important milestone in shot-on-video horror history, newly preserved from the original 3/4" master tape.

Mean Girls

Mean Girls is a 2004 USA / Canada comedy by Mark Waters.
Starring Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett and Rachel McAdams. IMDb

Never cut by film censors but its rating was changed on appeal from R to PG-13.

Director Mark Waters commented in article from telegraph.co.uk :

My favourite line is the one we fought hardest to keep because the ratings board really wanted us to cut it. We were very adamant that we shouldn't have to and Tina [Fey] wrote a very eloquent letter to the MPAA accusing them of sexism, saying, This is a line where a girl is talking about her body in a purely anatomical way and there's nothing profane about it.

They eventually backed down and let us have it which was, when in the assembly, Bethany Byrd says: I can't help it if I have a heavy flow and a wide set vagina. We dug in and kept that against a big onslaught of people trying to make us change it.

Summary Notes

Lindsay Lohan stars as Cady Heron, a 16 year old homeschooled girl who not only makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), the ex-boyfriend of queenbee Regina George (Rachel McAdams), but also unintentionally joins The Plastics, led by Regina herself. Join Cady as she learns that high school life can and will be really tough.

The film and video versions are cut in exactly the same way. The cuts were made in consultation with the BBFC but made voluntarily by the distributors to tone down the overall level of violence and gun play in the film.

The BBFC commented on the cuts in the Annual Report covering 2016:

The film was submitted for video release in an extended cut in 2015, including a sequence juxtaposing violent imagery with that of a child.

BBFC's Advisory Panel on Children's Viewing perceived that there were no issues of potential harm in the film's depiction of a child among the violent imagery, and that the dated style, unrealistic storyline and largely bloodless depiction of violence lessened the impact of the violent scenes.

In Men of Hard Skin, a Spanish drama following a man's affair with a priest, a potentially indecent image did not occupy the same frame as the child actor in the scene, but the apparently unbroken pan from the man's penis to the child had the effect of creating an indecent image. The film was self-rated X in the US in the short window when the newly introduced X rating was still accepted by cinemas. MPAA
Unrated

106:45s UK: Passed 18 uncut (cheekily labelled the Tormented Cut) for strong bloody violence and horror for:

The BBFC explained their 18 rating:

Mirrors is a supernatural horror film based on a Korean film, Into the Mirror , about a man who discovers that mirrors create a dangerous alternate reality after he takes on a security job in a burnt out department store. The work was passed '18' for strong bloody violence and horror. A reduced version of the film had previously been passed '15' for cinema release.

Like many supernatural horror films, the story involves sustained personalised threat. In this case the threat is not only centred upon the lead male character but also his family, including his children. In particular, towards the end of the film, one child is shown to nearly drown and the other has her throat cut slightly by an evil mirror image of her mother, before being rescued by her real mother.

The film features two notably gory and bloody moments: a character slowly cuts his own neck with a shard of glass, causing a substantial blood spurt onto a mirror and an' evil mirror image' forces a woman to pull apart her own jaws, bisecting her face and partially removing her lower jaw, accompanied by copious blood splatter, terrorisation and pain. Despite the well established supernatural fantasy setting, these scenes exceed the upper level of the '15' category for which the BBFC's Guidelines state 'strong threat and menace are permitted. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable' and 'violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury'.

UK: Passed 15 for sustained threat, strong violence, horror and language after BBFC advised catregory cuts were implemented for:
  • 2008 cinema release

The BBFC commented:

This film was originally shown to the BBFC for advice. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive an '18' classification but that the requested '15' could be achieved by making some reductions throughout the film.

In particular, the BBFC suggested:

  1. that the bloody spray in the slashing open of a throat in the opening sequence should be removed
  2. that focus on a badly burned partially naked woman, crying out in pain, should be reduced or removed
  3. that the protracted bloody detail when a woman's jaw is ripped apart be reduced
  4. that, after scissors have been pressed against the neck of a young girl, the sight of scissors being drawn across the neck causing a larger bloody wound be removed.

When the finished version of the film was submitted, edits had been made, reducing the strength of the stronger moments sufficiently for the content in the film to be allowable under BBFC Guidelines at '15'.

India: The film was cut to remove references to Kashmir. The same cut version later appeared on Netflix
See article from hindustantimes.com

It was previously reported that director Christopher McQuarrie had set the film's final act in Kashmir because he wanted to make a more politically complex film.

However, the version of the film released in Indian theatres has no mention of Kashmir - there are noticeable cuts in the final act of the film, and a section of the credits mentioning the banned location has been deleted.

The film still contains a few oblique references such as Ilsa Faust makes a passing reference to the Nubra Valley and the Siachen glacier, but never is the word Kashmir mentioned.

Summary Review: Terrible

The wife of a famous anthropologist is rushed to hospital in labor. At the same time, druggies raid the hospital looking for drugs, causing the baby to be stillborn. While recovering from the trauma, she learns that her husband has disappeared in Africa. She launches an expedition to find him, and discovers a bizarre world of sexy jungle women!

I felt it would have been a worthy investment to sit through the terrible opening of the film, with its terrible story line and its terrible acting, just to get to see Jenny Neumann have sex with an Ape Man. I never got to see it because it never happened. I don't know what version you guys watched but I sat through a 90 minute badly lighted movie with hopes to see 30 seconds of a nudity. Was it worth it? No

The BBFC cut the 2010 cinema release by 9s for a 12A rating: Company chose to remove a use of the Punjabi term 'maderchod' (equivalent to 'motherfucker') in order to obtain a '12A' classification. An uncut '15' classification was available.

The BBFC explained their 12A rating:

Mitti is a Punjabi language drama about two rival tribes in a village fighting for dominance. The film was classified 12A for moderate violence.

The moderate violence includes the depiction of gun shootings and hand-to-hand fight scenes, including kicks and punches. The violence is realistic and occasionally threatening, but never focuses on strong detail of injury. The Guidelines for violence at 12A allow for depictions of violence where there is no emphasis on injuries or blood .

The film also contains infrequent mild language (eg bloody').
