UK: Passed 18 uncut:

While the mighty Shaw Brothers were dominating the Hong Kong martial arts scene with hard-hitting features like THE CHINESE BOXER and dazzling us with an aesthetic brilliance found in productions such as LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA or THE SHAOLIN DISCIPLES, writer and star JACKIE CHAN and director Chen Chi-Hwa were cutting across much of the pomposity associated with many of these types of films and offering something much more akin to parody with HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU

Accident-prone Jiang (Chan) dreams of learning Kung Fu from a master, but when he takes employment as a bodyguard at a shady mansion, he stumbles upon an evil witch and finds himself in the middle of an uncertain future.

Funny, inventive and clever, HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU provides light-hearted action, some bonkers scenarios and of course, Chan's patented style of fun and fury.

This fabulous remake of Cheh Chang's classic The Boxer from Shantung (1972) from the legendary Shaw Brothers studios is given a 90s makeover chock full with stunts, fights and awe inspiring action sequences. However, when he refuses to accept an offer to join the gang which set him up in the first place, Heston finds himself murderously pursued through the streets of New Orleans. A host of familiar genre faces including Hal Holbrook ( Creepshow ), Rutanya Alda ( Amityville II: The Possession ), Julia Montgomery ( The Kindred ) and Lauren-Marie Taylor ( Friday the 13th Part 2 ) rounds out the cast of this gloriously mean-spirited slice from the slasher golden age, Girls Nite Out !

The students of DeWitt University are preparing themselves for a night of fun and frolics in the form of an all-night scavenger hunt. Little do they know that they are in fact the ones being hunted... An unhinged assailant, disguised in the college's goofy bear mascot outfit -- and bearing knives for claws, two years before Freddy donned his famous gloves -- is stalking the campus hellbent on carving up co-eds.

Originally released under the only marginally more appropriate title of The Scaremaker , Girls Nite Out is a decidedly singular slasher flick which comes on like a frenetic cross between Animal House and Friday the 13th -- veering from jovial frat antics to jarringly disturbing scenes of the killer shrieking obscenities as he slices up his victims. On this nite out, no one is coming home!

Though featuring the Shaw Brothers custom brand of martial arts mayhem, HUMAN LANTERNS also taps into the early 80s craze for the American slasher film and the earlier Hammer horrors by providing a grisly take on the serial killer feature in an inimitable Hong Kong style. When an unbalanced craftsman decides to get revenge on two Kung Fu masters by creating special lanterns constructed from the human skin of their dead relatives, all hell breaks loose in this gruesome tale of bloody retribution. Taking its inspiration from movies like Psycho and real cases like Ed Gein, HUMAN LANTERNS is clearly not for the faint-hearted with its over the top gore and sadistic qualities but this slice of darker than dark fantasy still manages to be both wonderfully horrible and impressively entertaining.

After directing his triptych of political (and acclaimed) spaghetti westerns (The Big Gundown; Face to Face; and Run, Man, Run), Sergio Sollima directed two crime thrillers in the poliziotteschi genre -- the name given to the violent and action-packed Italian crime thrillers that had become exceedingly popular amongst Italian audiences. Sollima was a perfect fit for this style of filmmaking, and the two films he directed in the genre are both essential viewing. Presented here is the second, Revolver , starring Oliver Reed and <strongFabio Testi.

Kidnappers have snatched the wife of Milan's top prison warden (Reed) and demand the release of an inmate (Testi) as ransom. But when the warden allows his prisoner to escape, the two become trapped in a deadly conspiracy that reaches from the halls of government to the bullet-riddled city streets. Can an obsessed lawman and an escaped convict survive the forces of corruption as well as each other, or does the ultimate law of society belong to the revolver?

"Makes Death Wish look like wishful thinking!" was the immortal tagline that accompanied the film upon its US release (also retitled Blood in the Streets), but Revolver--as is to be expected from Sollima--is a much more complex film. Sollima was a highly political director and his films were often allegorical, implicitly opposed to the corruption endemic in Italian society at the time. With music by the late maestro, Ennio Morricone (including one of his most beloved compositions, Un Amico), Eureka Classics is proud to present Revolver from a new 4K restoration for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.

From the macabre imagination of Stephen King (the bestselling author of Firestarter, The Shining & Carrie) comes this newly restored trio of thrilling tales linked by a stray cat that roams from one story to the next in search of a girl he must protect.

In 'Quitters Inc.', a New York family man (James Woods) is encouraged to give up cigarettes with the help of a shady self-help operation, who outline a litany of increasingly severe penalties for his loved ones if he cannot resist temptation.

'The Ledge' features a casino owner (Kenneth McMillan) who kidnaps and forces Johnny Norris (Robert Hays) into a dangerous wager for having an affair with his wife. If he can traverse the exterior ledge of the mobster's penthouse then he can leave safely. But if Norris refuses then grave consequences await.

Finally, a young girl (Drew Barrymore) has difficulty sleeping. Though her parents suspect the new family cat of wrongdoing, the girl knows better after she sees a horrifying troll emerging from her bedroom wall...

When former Shaw Brothers executive Raymond Chow founded rival studio Golden Harvest in 1970, he quickly teamed up with "Jimmy" Wang Yu -- Hong Kong's first kung fu superstar and formerly Shaw's biggest box office draw. Bringing over his peerless talent for taking on all foes with one hand tied behind his back, Wang wrote, directed and played the title role in one of his most unmissable kickass classics. From the legendary star of One-Armed Swordsman and The Chinese Boxer comes... One-Armed Boxer !

Yu Tian Long (Wang) is the best fighter to come out of his local martial arts school, but when he crosses the ruthless leader of a local crime syndicate, the big boss' brutal bevy of deadly killers make mincemeat out of the school and everyone inside. Now the only survivor of the massacre, and short of one appendage, Yu is gifted a powerful elixir that promises to give him the strength to take swift revenge on the army of assassins, each representing the most lethal forms of fighting from across the Eastern hemisphere.

Proving once and for all that you only need five fingers of death to get the job done, Wang would later reprise his role in the infamous sequel Master of the Flying Guillotine , but it's the dementedly inventive original where he's arguably at the height of his powers.

Mondo Macabro presents HOTEL FEAR - The world Blu-ray premier of a classic Italian thriller.

The story takes place in Italy towards the end of World War Two, in a run-down hotel by the shores of a large lake. A strange assortment of guests are staying there. They seem to be either suffering from mental illness, involved in scams of one sort or another, or hiding from something in their past.

Rosa, a teenage girl played by Leonora Fani, works with her mother, Marta, trying to keep the hotel functioning. Due to the war and the frequent bombing raids that take place, the hotel is on its last legs and even finding food for the guests is a major problem. Rosa writes letters to send to her father who is off fighting in the war. Rosa's mother dies unexpectedly, and suddenly the girl finds herself at the mercy of the sexually rapacious and insane hotel guests. After a vicious rape, Rosa despairs. She calls on her absent father to avenge her. And it seems her call is answered when the guests die violently at the hands of a masked, gloved killer. But who really is this mystery assassin? And is Rosa losing her grip on reality?

This was director Francesco Barilli's second feature film, after the highly regarded PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK. Due to distribution problems the film has been hard to see. It has never been released in the US before and this is its world premier on Blu-ray.

Banned as a video nasty in 1983. Uncut and BBFC 18 rated since 2022 Blu-ray. Uncut and MPAA R rated in the US.

Summary Review: Cheese and sleaze!

Not exactly a straight slasher as many believe but it's surely as cheesy, and unintentionally funny as any slasher from the 80's.

Mardi Gras Massacre could be considered as a toned down exploitation low budget. The plot asks for brutality, violence, sleaze but the truth is that the execution of the idea isn't as half as good as it should.

The ritual method is repeated in all the death scenes. So we don't get originality or probably there wasn't enough budget to at least create three different gore scenes. It's okay but even ultra low budget slashers have at least two different killing methods! Anyways, Mardi Gras Massacre has generated some kind of cult over the years but sincerely, this isn't a must see. The movie should only be watched by b-movie lovers or morbid fans of low budget cheese and sleaze!

Starring Chow Yun-fat (Hard Bolied, The Killer, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) The Seventh Curse is a curious entry from Golden Harvest, the legendary production company which had previously bought us the stone cold Bruce Lee classics, Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon. When Dr Yuen (Chin Siu-ho) attempts to rescue a girl about to be sacrificed by the Worm Tribe in the middle of a Thailand jungle, he is damned with seven 'Blood Curses'. Though he finds a temporary antidote this will only last a year and he must return to the jungle to find a permanent cure.

The Seventh Curse is an adventurous story of lost tribes and deadly magic. Featuring strange locales, evil sorcerers and monsters, this bonkers thrill fest is a rollicking Asian oddity, a must for collectors of exotic Hong Kong cinema.

NANCY DANCER DIED ON FEBRUARY 13, 1978. THAT WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

With only five films, New Orleans-based writer/producer/director Jack Weis became one of the most enigmatic figures in '70s exploitation. And for his final trashterpiece, Weis delivered a filth-fueled, disco-drenched and gore-soaked epic of butchered hookers, hard-boiled homicide cops and a prissy psycho with an Aztec sacrifice fetish that remains a once-in-a-lifetime sleaze experience.

Curt Dawson (BLOOD BATH), Ronald Tanet (CRYPT OF DARK SECRETS) and February '75 Playboy Playmate Laura Misch star in this "shocking-yet-hysterical fever dream of regional filmmaking" (Bleeding Skull) with a soundtrack by Dennis Coffey & Mike Theodore (BLACK BELT JONES) and still banned in the UK as one of the original DPP 39 Video Nasties, now featuring a 2K master compiled from the best surviving post-Katrina elements and a revealing new interview with Weis himself. Pink Flamingos is a 1972 USA crime comedy horror by John Waters.
Starring Divine, David Lochary and Mary Vivian Pearce. Melon Farmers link  Youtube link   BBFC link 2020   IMDb

Cut by the BBFC for varying amounts for an 18 rating between 1990 and 1999. Uncut and 18 rated for 2008 DVD but this was never released. Formally uncut and BBFC 18 rated for 2022 Blu-ray. Uncut and MPAA NC-17 rated in the US.
UK: Passed 18 uncut for sexual violence, strong real sex, nudity:
  • 2022 Sony/Criterion Collection (RB) Blu-ray at UK Amazon #ad released on 25th July 2022

The BBFC agreed to an uncut 18 rated DVD release in 2008 but the release was cancelled. The BBFC commented in 2008 about the 3 cuts to be waived:

  • Probably the most difficult scene was the one featuring a man assaulting a woman with live chickens. However, a careful viewing of the scene suggested that the handling of the chickens, although rough, was no stronger than other scenes of animals being manhandled that had been passed in other films. Furthermore, although the chickens were killed, the killing was quick and clean and therefore not in breach of BBFC policy on animal cruelty.
  • The scene showing a man masturbating and injecting semen into a woman's vagina was grotesque and repulsive, rather than erotic. Although the Board had previously expressed concerns about the non-consensual nature of the scene, the datedness of the film and the lack of credibility of the scene, argued against intervention. With regard to the sexual violence in the scene, the Board's conclusion was that the scene was so over-the-top and so divorced from reality, that the likely response was disgust, shock and horror, rather than arousal.
  • The brief explicit fellatio could be justified by the wider context of the film, in that the whole purpose of the film was to shock, disgust and amuse (in a blackly comic fashion), rather than to arouse, and the explicitness of the image was important in creating the film's effect.

The BBFC's ratings info from 2022 reads:

nudity : There is focus on a man's dilating anus, in close-up detail. There is wider full nudity.

sex : There is a scene of unsimulated fellatio between a fictional mother and son. There are other strong sex scenes, as well as references to ejaculation, masturbation and troilism. A man's semen is seen, in close-up detail.

sexual violence and sexual threat : A man rapes a woman, while daubing her in chicken blood. After masturbating over her, a man artificially inseminates an unconscious female prisoner. A man exposes himself to schoolgirls.

other issues: In unsimulated footage, a woman puts dog excrement in her mouth. There is infrequent very strong language ('c**t'), regular strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker') and discriminatory terms such as 'fag', 'dyke' and 'queen'. A chicken is killed on-screen. Threat, gore and implied violence are strong. There is brief drug misuse.

Promotional Material

When a pair of sociopaths (MINK STOLE and DAVID LOCHARY) with a habit of kidnapping women in order to impregnate them attempt to challenge her title, Divine resolves to show them and the world the true meaning of the word filthy. Incest, cannibalism, shrimping, and film history's most legendary gross-out ending--Waters and his merry band of Dreamlanders leave no taboo unsmashed in this gleefully subversive ode to outsiderhood, in which camp spectacle and pitch-black satire are wielded in an all-out assault on respectability.

Benedetta

Benedetta is a 2021 France/Belgium/Netherlands historical romance by Paul Verhoeven
Starring Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling and Daphne Patakia BBFC link 2020 IMDb

Uncut and 18 rated by the BBFC and Irish Film Classification Office. The film was released MPA Unrated in the US.

Summary Notes

A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair.

UK: Passed 18 uncut for sexual violence, strong sex, nudity, bloody violence.

Controversy

A lesbian nun thriller that features a sex scene that has been slammed by Catholic groups who have claimed it as 'appalling and blasphemous'. The film was released in Ireland on Good Friday, 2022. A scene which features a statue of Virgin Mary being used as a sex toy has been particularly criticised.

Promotional Material

From renowned provocateur Paul Verhoeven (Elle, Basic Instinct), BENEDETTA is a subversive erotic drama based on the true story of a 17th century nun entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair. Virginie Efira stars as the titular Benedetta, a nun whose religious fervor begins to manifest in increasingly sensual and violent visions of Jesus. These hallucinations arouse the suspicions of Charlotte Rampling's shrewd abbess, Sister Felicita, whose distrust grows when a farm girl called Bartolomea (Daphné Patakia) enters the convent seeking refuge, and quickly develops an attraction to Benedetta. Premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Verhoeven's intoxicating latest is a transgressive and alluring look at faith, power and religion, and is every bit as scandalous as you would expect from the controversial filmmaker.
