The BBFC commented:

This work was originally seen for advice in an unfinished form. The company was advised that the film was likely to receive an 18 rating but that their preferred 15 rating could be achieved by making changes to three scenes. These were:

  • to reduce sustained close focus on nudity in a lap dancing scene,
  • to reduce the focus on sexual detail during a mimed sequence of sexual activity, and
  • to reduce focus on ejaculate over a pin-up calendar.

When the finished version of the film was submitted for formal rating, changes had been made to satisfactorily address these issues and the film was consequently rated 15.

Prosthetic penis embarrasses the BBFC

This genial rites-of-passage drama was given an 18-rating by the BBFC solely because of a scene that showed its teenage heroine slapping at a (prosthetic) penis. David Cooke, head of the BBFC commented:

Legally the fact that it's a prosthetic makes no difference. But I would be the first to concede that it was a terrible shame. I would have loved to have rated the film as a 15.

Stirling council later broke with the ruling and released The Ketchup Effect as a 12A-certificate.

Summary Review : Narrative nonsense

A husband and wife lock their diaries in a drawer and also know that they read each other's entries, a plot device which takes them from one sexual encounter to another.

A main female character sums up this pile of narrative nonsense at the conclusion of the film saying something like, I was faithful by being unfaithful. Meaning she was compliant in her husband's wishes for her to link up with their son-in-law so her horny husband could become sexually excited by watching her, thus sparking their marriage alive again.

It's a beautifully strange, quirky, erotic well-filmed movie which has incredible attention to detail and then lets itself down in comic moments.

From article from dvdcompare.net quoting Craig Lapper of the BBFC:

The video version (from Embassy) and the DVD version (from Arrow) both contain the cut UK cinema version. The cuts were mostly to remove what (at the time) were considered overly explicit visuals of female genitalia. In a number of cases, shots were simply darkened or blurred rather than removed. A couple of other shots were removed, one showing an erection glimpsed through an man's open shorts and one to reduce a scene of a man masturbating a woman. It is unlikely that any of these cuts would be necessary nowadays at 18 but we were only presented with the cut version for DVD release.

Thanks to Daniel who says that Arrow's 2001 DVD is actually uncut.

The shot of the man's (fake) erection is intact and there are a lot of shots of female genitalia present and clearly lit throughout.

After an Egyptian army, commanded by British officers, is destroyed in a battle in the Sudan in the 1880's, the British government is in a quandary. They decide to ask General Charles "Chinese" Gordon, something of a folk hero in the Sudan as he had cleared the area of the slave trade, to arrange for the evacuation. Gordon agrees but also decides to defend the city against the forces of the Mahdi - the expected one - and tries to force the British to commit troops.

Summary Review: Entertaining

Sasha Mitchell ("Kickboxer 2&3") triumphantly returns to the ring as David Sloan, fighting not just for his survival, but for his beautiful wife, who has become the sexual captive of the despicable world champion, Tong Po. Framed, forgotten and furious, Sloan has been wasting away in prison, but the Feds agree to release him if he will get inside Tong Po's impenetrable Mexican fortress, protected by its deadly guards and adorned by its sexual slaves. Sloan has no choice but to enter into Po's tournament of champions, a savage battle where winner takes all - and to Sloan - that means everything! Reluctantly, alliances form with a few others to help him out.

Kickboxer 4 is better than a lot of American martial art movies. No, its not a classic like the first 2 Kickboxers or Bloodsport . But overall, Kickboxer 4 delivers (as a good B-rated movie in the genre of American martial arts). The action is a plenty, there is a tournament, good-looking locales, and acting that isn't terrible along with a story that has a decent plot. Kickboxer 4 has its flaws, but is still entertaining from start to finish.

From Daily Yomiuri

The Japan version, which will also be screened in other Asian countries, is only a minute or two longer than the American one, but according to producer Lawrence Bender, it packs a bigger punch. There are a few extra shots in different scenes, the anime sequence of O-Ren Ishii's (Lucy Liu) childhood is longer, and the entire House of Leaves scene, where the Bride (Uma Thurman) slices and dices the Crazy 88, remains in color throughout (as opposed to cutting to black and white and then back to color in the American version). In addition, the dedication in the opening credits to the late Kinji Fukasaku, the king of ultraviolence and one of Tarantino's great influences, is not included on the American version.

Of course, images of dismembered corpses falling en masse into a bloody pool have more impact in color than in black and white, but while Bender admits the Japan version is more violent than the American one, he maintains that all the changes were made in the name of style and aesthetics.

According to Bender, Tarantino had wanted to make a Japan version of Kill Bill from the beginning, out of respect to both the culture that inspired a considerable amount of the film's content and the land where much of the film's first installment takes place. Also, the version is a salute to the Japanese who worked on the film's crew and cast, including Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba, who plays Okinawan swordmaker Hattori Hanzo.

Americans just can't take as much as the Japanese, Bender admits.

Anyone familiar with nunsploitation will recognise this as a stand out film.

There are some very atmospheric set pieces in the film Anita Ekberg's flashbacks and the giallo inspired murder of the old woman.

The dubbing detracts from the power of the film by having cheesy actors do the overdubs. Some of the editing is a bit sloppy but Italian exploitation fans are well used to this. The gorgeous Paola Morra is worth the price of the film alone. Well worth checking out.

Summary Review: Nicely Done
New York police are trying to find out who is behind a rash of 'handcuff' murders, while a young artist (and psychic) is finding herself drawing the horrid crimes!

The opening sequences are quite grabbing, the murders are inventive (although not gory), and the plot builds to a great showdown climax.

Mastroianni's direction is sleekly well done, and the subtle piano score is a nice touch. The film also carries a kind of sexual vibe through out.

The cast is quite good in their performances. Nicely done on all levels.

Young Terry Lambert returns home from serving a prison term for a gang-rape he was forced to participate in. He seeks revenge on his lawyer and the girl who framed him. But his real problem is his overbearing mother. Terry has developed an interest in rough, violent sex, and gory death. Now, one by one, some of the town's women pop up dead.

This is a spellbinding film that concentrates more on suspense and character development than supplying cheap thrills. THE KILLING KIND is definitely cult director Curtis Harrington's masterpiece, and the great cast does some of their finest work.

The Killing of America is a 1981 USA / Japan crime documentary by Sheldon Renan and Leonard Schrader (uncredited).
Starring Chuck Riley, Ed Dorris and Thomas Noguchi. IMDb
Not formally banned in the US, but the film was never released, distributed, televised nor made available for sale in the USA, from when the documentary was produced in 1981, until released on home video by Severin in 2016.

The film exists in 2 versions, the US Version and the Japanese Version. Both were passed 18 uncut for UK home video.

Promotional Material
In 1982, filmmakers Seldon Renan and Academy Award® nominee Leonard Schrader (KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, MISHIMA, BLUE COLLAR) created a graphic and provocative examination of America's history with and penchant for senseless violence, mass shootings and cold-blooded murder. It was condemned as exploitive and obscene (The New York Times), acclaimed as among the most controversial documentaries in the history of cinema (Fantasia Festival), and never distributed, televised or made available for sale in the United States.

See article from sexgoremutants.co.uk :

The Japanese Version is an interesting alternative: after the sniper shooting, it opens with footage of the Grand Canyon. It's 20 minutes in longer than the US cut in total - the running time here is 115 minutes and 46 seconds. Along with a subtly different order of events, we also get a completely different narration (Japanese with optional yellow subtitles), and additional moments of filler such as an energetic pop song about time sung over scenes of Americans being active in all manner of ways - skydiving, Frisbee-throwing and so on. This is cheerful America , the narrator tells us, before we cut to racial riots and Kennedy's shooting.

It's long been rumoured that the film's Japanese cut, re-edited specially for their market, contained more extreme content than its US counterpart. But this isn't really the case -- it's more that sequences are extended with additional footage. Most notably, the sports montage mentioned above and extra footage of John Lennon at the end.

The greatest difference is the narration: though the script is largely the same, plenty of subtle changes have been made, and the Japanese narrator's tone is totally condemning - he portrays America as a cesspool sent crazy by its pursuit of freedom, and everyone in it as a nutter.

The Killing of Sister George is a 1968 USA drama by Robert Aldrich.
Starring Beryl Reid, Susannah York and Coral Browne. IMDb

Uncut in the US but the film was saddled with and X rating for 1968 release. The film was re-rated to R in 1972. The film was cut by the BBFC for an X rating in 1968 but several local councils were happy for the film to be screened uncut in their areas. Later was uncut and 18 rated for home video.
Summary Review: A disintegrating lesbian relationship

George (Beryl Reid) plays a cheerful district nurse in a BBC soap opera. However, her character is to be killed off, and George realises that the only other job she can get is the voice of a cow on children's TV. Her life begins to fall apart as her lover Childie (Susannah York) has an affair with a predatory TV producer.

This film is memorable on many levels. Along with vividly recapturing 1960's Swinging London and its lesbian scene, it also provides a harrowing and moving portrayal by Reid and York of two women in a disintegrating relationship.

Beryl Reid manages to strike the right balance between tragedy and comedy, managing to be fearless and outrageously funny in one scene, whilst seeming broken and pathetic in the next.

Summary Notes: Shaw Brothers Classic

King Boxer came out in 1973 and is a classic example of a Shaw Brothers kung fu film - a genre they helped pioneer and perfect with this movie being one of the finest efforts from this time period. It also has the distinction of being the first kung fu film to be released in the United States, just ahead of Bruce Lee's equally influential Enter the Dragon.

Promising young student Chi-Hao is sent away to train under a new master in order that he may be able to win a martial arts tournament and thus prevent the local thugs from getting the power and prestige that would come were they to win it.

The filmmakers maintain just the right level of pacing with very short lulls between action sequences. Let's face it - we're not watching King Boxer for its thoughtful characterization. That is not to say that this film is not well made or doesn't take itself seriously because it does, but it is hardly Shakespeare either.

King Boxer features betrayal, torture, revenge and even some heroic style redemption thrown in for good measure - all heightened to melodramatic levels making for a very entertaining ride.

The BBFC commented:

This work was originally classified 15 without cuts on 15/10/2010. The BBFC has, after an appeal by the distributor of The King's Speech against the original 15 rating, applied its formal reconsideration process to the cinema release and classified it 12A with the Consumer Advice Contains strong language in a speech therapy context .

The BBFC's language Guidelines for 12A state: The use of strong language (for example f***) must be infrequent . In the case of The King's Speech there are two isolated instances where the character of King George VI uses strong language several times at the instigation of his therapist during the speech therapy sessions he is undergoing to alleviate his stammer. The strong language is not aggressive and not directed at any person.

The Guidelines state that because works from time to time present issues in ways which cannot be anticipated, these criteria will not be applied in an over literal way if such an interpretation would lead to an outcome which would confound audience expectations .

After careful consideration by the President and Director of the BBFC, the Board took the view that the way the strong language is presented in The King's Speech did not contravene the language Guidelines at 12A and that the public would understand why the Board has reached this decision.

123:23s UK: Passed 15 for strong bloody violence, strong language after BBFC advised pre-cuts for: The BBFC commented:

This film was originally seen for advice in an unfinished version. The company was informed the film was likely to be classified 18, but that their requested 15 could be achieved by making some reductions in scenes of violence. When the finished version was submitted for formal classification, reductions had been made and the film was passed 15.

The BBFC further commented in the Annual Report covering 2014:

Although the violence is generally staged in a highly cartoonish manner, and the action is fast-paced and rapidly edited, there was too much cumulative focus on blood and the infliction of injury during a scene in which a secret agent fights and kills a large number of people in a church. When the film was submitted for formal classification, reductions had been made to this sequence, meaning the finished version was classified 15.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was 2nd top complained about film in 2015 with 38 complaints. The BBFC commented in its 2015 Annual Report:

One of the issues raised by the public with regards to Kingsman: The Secret Service was the level of violence at 15, particularly in regards to a fight scene in a church.

The BBFC saw a version of the film before it was complete and offered advice as to how the film distributor's desired 15 rating could be achieved. Otherwise, the film would have been classified 18. The distributor chose to make changes before formally submitting the film for classification. While there are some strong moments of violence in the film, they are relatively brief and do not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury to the extent they require an 18 classification. The BBFC therefore classified the film 15.

Other complaints focussed on a scene involving a crude sex reference which is unexpected but intended to be funny. In part thanks to the comic context, this line did not require the entire film be restricted to an adult audience only by way of an 18 classification. [The BBFC are being a bit coy here, but presumably are referring to the Swedish princess offering anal sex as a reward for her rescue].

US: The same cut version is MPAA R rated for:

See interview from denofgeek.com . Director Matthew Vaughn has denied that changes were made to obtain a 15 rating.

Den of Geek: I should ask you just to clarify the certification of the film in the UK ...

Vaughn: I haven't changed a fucking frame!

Den of Geek: Absolutely nothing? The BBFC posted that certain changes were made prior to submission to get a 15 certificate in the UK ?

Vaughn: Nothing. You've seen it! They're pretty intelligent people, the BBFC. And I think they get it right most of the time. They watched it, and I sat down with them. The violence is fun. You don't see people grimacing. They're laughing with it. It's like Tom & Jerry. It's over the top and colourful and playful.

However an article from movie-censorship.com gives more hope of an uncut version:

The British cut of the movie clocks in at 128:34 minutes while the German release has a duration of 129:25 minutes. The difference of 51 seconds is quite large and isn't due to rounding up. Also, logos can most likely be ignored since the film's sole distributor is 20th Century Fox. Therefore, it's quite possible that the film's UK pre-cuts won't affect other markets.

This was the first film produced by Harry Novak

Sterilox, asexual ambassador from a distant planet, comes down to earth in search of feminine breeding stock. A mad scientist treats the alien to dancing sex robots.

OK Kiss Me Quick is one quirky film with very little plot and enough bare chested women to go around for all. The make-up/FX are so lame you have to laugh.

When car trouble strands a honeymooning couple in a small Southern European village, an aristocratic family in the area reaches out to help them with sinister consequences.

An ulta-stylish effort that really is a wonderful film, from its memorable, atmospheric opening scene set in a cemetery to the spectacular climax involving a colony of bats.

It is well acted by a great cast, some of whom appeared in other Hammer films, and it is confidently directed by Don Sharp.

Kites is a subtitled Hindi language romantic action thriller in which an Indian man and a Mexican woman are on the run across America. The film was classified 12A for moderate violence and threat.

The film contains frequent action sequences and stunts, but the violence is generally not realistic or shown in detail. One scene, however, does involves a more realistic threat to two alleged thieves. They are threatened with a knife and a shooting is implied. This scene is the strongest moment of threat in the film.
