Nice 'n' Naughty Responds to Councillor Concerns
Nice ' n' Naughty would like to respond to the comments made by Councillor Marshall at last night's successful sex establishment license renewal for our store, located at 27 High Street, Bangor. We are grateful to Councillor Marshall for raising the
concern that Nice ' n' Naughty stores could sell violent hardcore pornography that is demeaning to women since there is often confusion as to what types of material are available in licensed sex shops.
At each of our 12 licensed stores, we are carefully regulated and perhaps an object of greater scrutiny, than for example, an unlicensed premises who sell adult material. We are acutely aware of our responsibilities and staff are trained
to ensure only adults gain access to the premises. Any pornographic products found within each store can only be viewed by adults who choose to enter them. Once inside customers may purchase a variety of items ranging from massage oils and lingerie on one
end of the spectrum, to sex toys on the other. However I assume by Councillor Marshalls comments that she is referring to the extensive range of over 500 R18 certified DVDs available in store. Customers often use the word hardcore to denote R18 classification.
Before we can sell an adult DVD, it is subject to classification by the British Board of Film Sensors (BBFC), much in the same way as any movie. DVDs classified as R ( restricted) 18 may only be supplied in licensed sex shops and supplied
to adults of not less than 18 years of age. The category is primarily for explicit works of consensual sex or strong fetish material involving adults. During the classification process, the BBFC state that certain types of material are not acceptable and films
containing such material will fail classification. Included in prohibited material is anything that indicates withdrawal of consent, or any infliction of pain or acts that may cause lasting physical harm. At the more extreme end the classification prohibits
penetration by an object associated with violence or likely to cause harm. On this basis, it would be impossible for us to supply an R18 DVD that was in any way violent, since it would not pass the stringent classification of the BBFC. We are unsure what shops
or products Councillor Marshall may have previously encountered or when, but the classification laws are quite explicit on this point. Nice ' n' Naughty would however be delighted to invite her to our premises in order to allay any concerns.
In terms of being demeaning, the BBFC is equally as clear, stating that any humiliation or abuse which does not form part of clearly consenting role play is not acceptable. They go on to say that strong physical or verbal abuse, even if
consensual, is unlikely to be accepted. As such the content of the certified R18 titles sold by Nice ' n' Naughty, is neither violent nor demeaning and would strongly refute the allegation.
But of course there is the wider point that some may feel any sexual activity portrayed in a DVD is demeaning to women. I do understand and empathize with this view. However it is not born out of fact. Over 60% of customers visiting our
stores are women who clearly do not feel demeaned by our products. Similarly almost 30% of adult DVDs sold in store are purchased by women. Clearly many women have no objection to R18 media.
There is also the issue of social responsibility, in that Nice ' n' Naughty attempts to control who may purchase the material in store. This is a considerable improvement on the position taken by the leading internet providers,
whose search engines in the main allow unrestricted access to a variety of hard core material, some of which may never have been classified. Hence whilst it is easy to tarnish the role of a licensed sex shop, it at least offers a regulated alternative to the
plethora of downloadable pornographic material.
Nice ' n' Naughty would urge Councillor Marshall to visit our store and gain a closer understanding of the challenges we face and the control we exercise. Nice 'n'

Closure of the Nice 'n' Naughty Aberystwyth store
It is with great sadness we have announced the closure of the Nice 'n' Naughty Aberystwyth store after nearly
a decade of trading from 22 Piers Street.
We would like to thank all our customers that have supported us over the years and hope to see them soon at one of our stores across the UK or on our website.
Nice 'n' Naughty Aberystwyth store was one of 13 stores across the UK, opening in 2004 with a flourish of activity and a steady flow of intrigued customers from far and wide. The large student population created a regular customer base
as Nice 'n' Naughty offered a range of fancy dress costumes alongside the huge selection of adult toys, DVDs, Magazines and Lingerie.
However, over the past 3 years we have seen a dramatic decline in regular customers due to the tough economic times we are all living in today. Although there is always a busy period when the students arrive in October each year it is
not enough to sustain the business throughout the whole year and as the students leave we have found the longer summer months with a lack of tourist visitors to the store increasingly difficult.
Nice 'n' Naughty continue to trade from stores in Brighton, Bristol, Bangor, Bolton, Chester, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Southport, Warrington, Wigan and the website which offers online shopping.
Nice 'n' Naughty Supports Other Enterprises

Little did magistrate Kathryn Loftus know that when she had a tattoo on her wrist, it would go on to inspire a new business, a social venture, a trademarked brand, support from national adult store Nice ' n' Naughty, and a whole host of other accolades.
On a trip to Milton Keynes, Kathryn and group of University friends decided to have a tattoo which represented their friendship and celebrated the notion of difference. Each of them had the word other tattooed on their wrist.
This was to be the start of a life changing period for Kathryn. Wanting to give something back to the LGBT community of Yorkshire which had supported her in coming out , she set up The Other Guide, a web resource aimed at supporting
lesbian, bisexual and trans women in Yorkshire and Other Enterprises, a social enterprise, aimed at enhancing the lifestyles of the LGBT community.
Since then the venture has gone from strength to strength with Kathryn being asked to get involved in a wide variety of activities including organisation of events and fundraising, giving entrepreneurial talks in schools, supporting the
Greater Police Authority's same sex domestic violence campaign, taking on the Sheffield Lesbian Network and contributing to national publications. Kathryn is an active member of the Leeds and Bradford LGBT Pride committees, a trustee of the Bradford Equity
Partnership, has been promoted in two LGBT magazines and interviewed on her local radio station.
Now somewhat of a local role model in Yorkshire, she has been nominated for the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award in LGBT at The National Diversity Awards.
And all this on top of a full time job!
After much discussion the directors of The Other Guide took the decision to turn their share based company into a social enterprise (Community Interest Company) in order to maximise the potential to support the LGBTQI community at the
heart of its work. The community of interest is the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community and those questioning their sexuality. Other Enterprises (UK) C.I.C provides an online resource called The Other Guide which is a one-stop-shop
listing businesses, meetings, groups, networking and social events across the Yorkshire region for lesbian, bisexual and trans women. It is unique in that it is the only web resource of its kind serving the entire Yorkshire region. Other Enterprises
(UK) C.I.C aims to create a more embracing and accepting society by promoting the message of it's ok to be other ; and in so doing, giving those that identify as other in society the confidence to celebrate difference and diversity. Our range
of other merchandise is used to promote the values of Other Enterprises (UK) C.I.C and any profits made are used to develop the online web resource, advocacy and awareness raising services that are provided.
Nice ' n' Naughty MD Simon Prescott says:
I simply cannot believe the amount of work Kathryn has crammed into such a short period. We applaud the decision to change the business form a share based company to a social enterprise, in order to maximise their potential to support
the LGBTQI community. Nice 'n' Naughty feel that there is now a real platform for anyone questioning their sexuality and we are proud to be spreading the word via our stores nationwide. Indeed we have always supported diversity and have supplied many of their
customers a wide range of products, be it gay, lesbian, cross dressing, transgender or fetishisms. We are a non judgemental business whose aim is simply to help people safely enjoy their sexuality.
The foundation of what we do is about breaking free from the constraints of labels and judgements and encouraging all members of society to see that difference is something we should embrace. It's good to be other.

Director Simon Prescott said the company's achievement signalled that mainstream
attitudes to the sex industry were changing: It's unheard of for an adult

were impressed with the way we treat our staff. They get good wages, conditions,
health benefits and even gym membership. So it's easy for us to attract

From Phil, Feb 2007:
Nipped in there yesterday, thinking Valentines day,
and me being in serious trouble as I'd not got anything for her yet; and
how surprised was I!
First by the range of toys, DVDs and Lingerie, but also by how
comfortable the place felt! The guy behind the counter was really
friendly, and seemed to know what he was talking about!
They had a great range of Rampant Rabbits, which should keep anyone's
wife happy, including mine! He took me through their different
functions, and I ended up with an all singing all dancing version that
should keep her happy for hours!
Then it was on to something to wear, and ended up with a rather slinky
set from Wild Designs!
Will definitely be in there again, and may even treat us to a DVD, will
take the wife next time as well, as I'm sure she'll fell as relaxed in
there as I did!
Well done nicennaughty for creating a sex shop for the 21st century!
News from Chris, Feb 2009: Clone
I visited what used to be Clonezone on St James' Street and it is now
Nice 'n' Naughty.
I was greeted by a really nice girl (think she was the naughty one LOL).
Something that was a surprise in the shop, as normally when I nip in to a
gay store, you normally get ignored by the staff!
It had some really nice bits, and seemed to cater for us gay boys and
girls really well. I ended up getting a couple of dvds on a multi buy
offer, and to my surprise was actually given some customer service!
They had a suggestion box on the counter, and the boy and girl there
were really sweet and helpful.
So going to wish the new guys n gals there a lot of luck for the future,
nice to see a shop that looks after its customers and willing to get them
what they want in a shop.
From Will, July 2012: Friendly and
Nice 'n' Naughty Bristol store is staffed by some really terrific guys.
I've shopped there five times in the last few months and the store
and staff are excellent.
Review from Tina, March 2009:
I know that you have a mass of reviews for this shop but I had to say
that because of the reviews I visited the shop today and found that all of
the accolades were extremely merited - very friendly and unobtrusive staff
(how do they get that balance right?) excellent range and good prices -
both in and outside the sale.
I will definitely be going back!
Fabulous. So impressed. I was extremely nervous as
I wasn't sure what the shop was going to be like but I can tell you that I am
never shopping anywhere else again.
The service is amazing and so friendly. I
asked quietly to one of the girls there if they catered for bi-sexual and tv/ts. Quietly she answered back, 'How much time have you got?' To
my amazement I spent over half an hour going through dress sizes and video/dvd
titles. I have never felt so comfortable about my sexuality. There is no
judgement passed and I had a great laugh and girly giggles.
The comment made about
the 'Big, Bald guy' a little scary looking but just as friendly as the girls and very much
there to look after everyone as he is the girls. Not that they need looking
after. They are all so on the ball never missing anyone, and always a smile to make
you that little bit more comfortable.
I recently visited Nice 'n' Naughty in Chester, and I would like to comment on the
shop from a customers point of view. I took my wife for a day out shopping in
Chester last week and we had checked out the Nice 'n' Naughty website but my wife
didn't want to go into a sex shop because the Private one we had been in before was seedy.
When we walked past the Nice 'n' Naughty shop it was great to see a nice window display with
sexy clothes. My wife decided to stay in the car while I went in to get her a Toy.
staff were so friendly and made me feel relaxed, the girl there explained all the types of
toys available., I went out and convinced my wife to come in as it was nothing like
the pushy sales man at private, although the man in Nice 'n' Naughty is big with a
bald head he is a really nice bloke and he showed me the videos while my wife was picking
a toy with the girl.
The choice of videos was better than the toys they had hundreds. I
recommend the shop to anyone and the pubs in Chester aren't bad either.
We have been visiting the shop now for some time and have
to say of any shop anywhere Nice N naughty have by far the best customer
service anywhere. Our first visit will remain with us for years to come. We
were after a vibrator and having walked in and spent sometime looking at the
extensive range of available products were at a loss as to what to go for.
It was our first visit and a little apprehensive as to what to expect. We
were approached by a young lady (Trish) who then spent ages explaining each
and every product to myself and Girlfriend. At no point were we pressured
into spending hundreds of pounds and we felt we would have been as much
thought of and received just as much attention if we had wanted just advice.
Since then we have visited this shop many many times and the service has
just got better. It’s so far removed from the stereo typical sex shop it has
to be visited to be believe.
If only all sex shops were this good, mind you I am glad they are not,
because that’s what sets Nice N Naughty aside and makes it such a pleasure
to go. Thanks for a great service, a great range of products and best of all
the best dedication to your customers we have ever encountered.
Review from Suki, February 2014: Best by Far

March 2007: North South Divide
What an unbelievable difference walking into the new

I went into the shop last week with my wife and could not believe the

I visited the Newcastle upon Tyne Nice

customer service to be second to none.
While looking at the product I was interested in, I

I have been into the new store at Southport and found

I had no idea what to buy, and was most grateful for the friendly and

and non - judgemental. They were absolutely fabulous, and I will have no

It was a most pleasurable shopping experience....
