One of the most underrated and neglected genre filmmakers of his generation, Spanish-born director José Ramón Larraz (Symptoms) finally receives his due with this collection of his work bringing together a fascinating cross-section of films from the first half of his lengthy cinematic career.

In Larraz s debut feature, the hitherto ultra-rare Whirlpool (1970), Vivian Neves stars as Tulia, a young model invited to a photographer s secluded country home for what purports to be a quiet weekend retreat but soon turns into a descent into deadly depravity. 1974 s Vampyres perhaps the best known and most widely-released of all José Larraz s films sees a duo of blood-hungry female vampires prowling the British countryside, from where they lure unsuspecting male motorists back to their imposing, dilapidated mansion. Meanwhile, in 1978 s The Coming of Sin (La Visita del Vicio, in its native Spanish), a young gypsy girl experiences a violent sexual awakening as her dreams of a naked young man on horseback become reality.

By turns terrifying, titillating, artful and scandalous, these three films assembled here collectively offer film fans a unique perspective on the fascinating, highly-varied career of one of the horror genre s most overlooked auteurs.

The Libertine is a euro-cult gem, a romantic sex comedy with a light S&M twist. When Mimi (Catherine Spaak, The Cat O Nine Tails, 1971) discovers her late husband s secret bachelor pad and sordid past, she sets out on a sexual adventure all of her own. From bored housewife to daring dominatrix, through a series of bold sexual encounters, each one more thrilling than the next, Mimi finds life as a widow much more than she could have ever hoped for. But when she meets Dr. Carlo De Marchi (Jean-Louis Trintignant, The Conformist, 1970) she discovers that the road to true love lies in finding a man who will willingly let her ride him around like a horse.

Spaak s third film for director Campanile is a beautiful ode to sixties pop culture, free love, and fetish. Now restored by Nucleus Films for its worldwide premiere to Blu-ray.

SEVEN WOMEN FOR SATAN - A wild psychedelic nightmare of love, lust and damnation!

By day a mild-mannered businessman, in his dreams Boris Zaroff hunts naked females on his country estates, just like his notorious father. One weekend, two visitors arrive at Boris's castle. The young girl is fascinated by tales of the wicked Zaroffs and asks if she can see their famous torture chamber. Maybe now the Zaroff's dreams can become reality once more.

SEVEN WOMEN FOR SATAN, originally titled THE WICKED WEEKENDS OF COUNT ZAROFF is a stylish and erotic horror film that was actually banned in France in the 1970s. Severely cut from its original running time and more or less forgotten for decades, the film now reaches Blu-ray in a stunningly restored new version created from the original negative.

Complete with a host of extras and with many deleted and alternate scenes, this release shows the film, for the first time, in the form its maker intended. An extended version restores the film closer to its original running time and a nearly hour-long interview with cast member and assistant director Robert de Laroche gives a hugely entertaining and insightful view into the making of the film, and the life and work of its creator Michel Lemoine.

"In this gripping Cold War noir, tensions simmer between residents of a small German village and the soldiers of a U.S. military base. Postwar economic hardship has turned the town of Sohnen into a vice district. The women serve as entertainment for the GIs, while the men struggle for survival in the black market. Helmed by Helmut Käutner (Port of Freedom), Black Gravel is hardboiled cinema at its most cynical, recalling such white-knuckle thrillers as Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear and Jules Dassin and A.I. Bezzerides's Thieves' Highway. Upon its initial release, Black Gravel was criticized for its honest depiction of lingering antisemitism--and the film was re-edited for general release. This Kino Classics edition presents both the uncensored "Premiere" cut and the revised "Distribution" version, both meticulously restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung.

    Special Features:
-Includes both the uncensored "Premiere" version and the re-edited "Distribution" version of the film

    Reviews

    • See review from flickeringmyth.com : " Alejandro Jororowsky and the collected works in this box set from Arrow Video are definitely in the running to be crowned with the title of being the ultimate Marmite "

    Promotional Material

Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of world cinema s most fabled iconoclasts. Often venerated as the ultimate cult film director, the Chilean artist shot to prominence as a 1970s counter-cultural icon thanks to the masterful movies presented on this collection: Fando y Lis , El Topo and The Holy Mountain . These extraordinary films, presented here alongside his stunning new film Psychomagic , bedazzled audiences with their unique aesthetic, contrasting violence and beauty; the sublime and the sacrilegious; the mystical and the macabre...

Jodorowsky s first feature, Fando y Lis , tells of young Fando and his paraplegic sweetheart Lis s journey through a series of surreal scenarios to find the enchanted city of Tar. An acid-western packed with vivid imagery, El Topo stars Jodorowsky as a master-gunfighter who duels with four sharp-shooting adversaries on his journey across a desert dreamscape. In The Holy Mountain , Jodorowsky plays The Alchemist, a guru who guides a troupe of pilgrims on a quest to ascend the Holy Mountain in search of spiritual enlightenment. Jodorowsky s new cinematic experience, Psychomagic, A Healing Art , explores the directors radical therapeutic work.

Influential, controversial and endlessly fascinating, Jodorowsky s surreal masterpieces are presented here in stunning new 4K restorations, accompanied with a wealth of illuminating extras, and new writing.

Fando Y Lis is a 1968 Mexico fantasy adventure by Alejandro Jodorowsky (as Alexandro Jodorowsky).
Starring Tamara Garina, Sergio Kleiner and Diana Mariscal. BBFC link IMDb

There are no censorship issues with this film but there was once an alternative version. Shortly after Federico Fellini's Satyricon (1969) was released to appreciative audiences in the USA, an English dubbed version was hurriedly released that was re-edited to appear more Felliniesque and was 13 minutes shorter than the original edit. It was a critical and financial flop... and hasn't been seen since.

El Tope is a 1970 Mexico western by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
With Alejandro Jodorowsky, Brontis Jodorowsky and José Legarreta. BBFC link IMDb

Cut by the BBFC for X rated cinema release in 1973. Then uncut and 18 rated on home video. Uncut in the US but a legal dispute between Jodorowsky and the distributors delayed a home video release for many years.

The Holy Mountain is a 1973 Mexico/US fantasy adventure by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
With Alejandro Jodorowsky, Horacio Salinas and Zamira Saunders. BBFC link IMDb

Cut by the BBFC for X rated cinema release in 1974. Uncut and 18 rated on home video. Uncut and MPAA R rated in the US.

    Link Here27th August 2020
Forced Entry is a 1975 US thriller by Jim Sotos.
With Tanya Roberts, Ron Max and Nancy Allen. BBFC link IMDb
There was a 1973 hardcore film, Forced Entry , by Shaun Costello that featured a maniac war vet killer. It obviously impressed and was remade by Jim Sotos without the hardcore. It was titled The Last Victim , originally with an MPAA PG rating. It didn't do well and was beefed up with stronger material. It was MPAA R rated and reissued theatrically as Forced Entry . This was a little too strong for the UK market and was toned down. However it was still banned by the BBFC from 1982 cinema release, but it did make it on to pre-cert VHS.

More recently the Director reworked the Forced Entry version into his Director's Cut which drops most of the stronger footage.

US: Uncut and MPAA R rated for:
    • 2020 Dark Force [The Last Victim + R rated Forced Entry] (RA) Blu-ray at US Amazon released on 25th August 2020

A hair-raising suspense drama starring Tanya Roberts (A View To a Kill), in a chilling nightmare faced by a beautiful woman forced into a life and death struggle against the demented obsessions of a psychopathic killer. The constant tension is unremitting from the first deadly encounter to the final diabolical conclusion. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Contains both the R rated and PG rated versions under the titles: THE LAST VICTIM and FORCED ENTRY along with reversible cover art featuring the original theatrical poster.

THERE S A NEW REASON TO BE AFRAID OF THE DARK.

A sci-fi/horror sleeper hit that birthed a franchise and launched the career of a new action movie icon, Pitch Black holds its own today as a nerve-shredding creature-feature in which the monsters outside finally meet their match against a monster within.

When an intergalactic transport ship crashes on a remote desert planet with no sign of help on the horizon, the survivors, led by Fry (Radha Mitchell), band together to find a way back home. Among the passengers is Riddick (Vin Diesel), a convicted murderer being transported by marshal Johns (Cole Hauser) and now freed of his chains and on the loose. But as a solar eclipse plunges the planet into total darkness, a threat even worse than Riddick reveals itself, and the last humans standing may have to form an uneasy truce with the cunning fugitive (whose eyes have been surgically altered to see in the dark) to last the long night.

Boasting crackerjack direction and a whip-smart script by David Twohy, as well as a star-making performance by Diesel, Riddick s first outing is freshly unleashed in an illuminating, brand new 4K restoration, with hours of exclusive bonus content.

Sometimes the truth is lost in battle! From Ralph Nelson, the acclaimed director of Soldier in the Rain, Father Goose, Duel at Diablo, Charly and The Wilby Conspiracy, comes this graphic and uncompromising anti-racist western starring Candice Bergen (The Hunting Party), Peter Strauss (The Jericho Mile) and Donald Pleasence (The Flesh and the Fiends). After a cavalry patrol is ambushed by the Cheyenne, the two survivors, Honus Gent (Strauss), a soldier highly devoted to his duty, and Cresta (Bergen), a white woman who had lived with Native Americans for two years, must reach the safety of the nearest fort. As they travel, Honus feels a growing affection for Cresta, but he is disgusted that her sympathies lie more with the Cheyenne than the U.S. government. As they arrive at the cavalry outpost on the eve of a planned attack on a Cheyenne village, Honus will finally learn who's been telling him the truth. Written by John Gay (Run Silent, Run Deep) from a novel by Theodore V. Olsen (The Stalking Moon), Soldier Blue features a rousing score by the great Roy Budd (Get Carter, The Black Windmill) and a strong supporting cast that includes John Anderson (Cotton Comes to Harlem), Jorge Rivero (Rio Lobo), Dana Elcar (The Nude Bomb) and director Nelson under the pseudonym Alf Elson.

Shopping: The Last House On The Left...

1972 USA horror by Wes Craven, once famously banned by the BBFC, just released on US Standard Edition Blu-ray

The Last House on the Left is a 1972 USA horror by Wes Craven.
Starring Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham and David Hess. YouTube iconBBFC link IMDb
In the US the Original Theatrical Version was uncut and X rated but was soon heavily cut for local censorship requirements and then for a series of attempts made in attaining an R rating. Much of the material cut for an R rating has now been declared lost. In 1986 director Wes Craven assembled his best remaining material previously cut from the film and declared that this version was his Director's Cut. It was released in the US Unrated by the MPAA.

The R rated version was banned from 1974 UK cinema release by the BBFC and the Greater London Council. The film, presumably still in the R rated version was released in the UK when BBFC certificates were not required but it was soon banned as a 'video nasty'. The BBFC continued its ban with the Unrated version being banned from cinema release in 2000.

In 2001 the DVD was resubmitted and was again banned, but this time cuts were being discussed. A resubmission in 2002 resulted in a BBFC offer of an 18 rating after cuts. The distributors appealed against the cuts but lost their case, and ended up with even more cuts than requested by the BBFC. The film was released in the following year with the same BBFC cuts but in two versions, including an alternative cut called Krug & Co.

By 2008 the BBFC had relented and the film was released without BBFC cuts in both the Unrated Version and the alternative Krug & Company.

US: The MPAA Unrated Version is released for:

There is also a UK release.

Gavin Salkeld investigates the appeal of Wes Craven's much censored classic

    Promotional Material

The directorial debut of Wes Craven, the man behind such horror favorites as A Nightmare on Elm Street , The Hills Have Eyes and Scream , The Last House on the Left justly retains its reputation as one of the most harrowing cinematic experiences of all time, nearly half a century on from its original release.

On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to the big city to attend a concert by shock-rockers Bloodlust. Attempting to pick up some marijuana on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic and depraved Krug (David Hess). Gagged and bound, the young women are bundled into a car trunk and driven to the woods, where the gang subject them to a terrifying ordeal of sexual humiliation, torture and murder.

Unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1972, The Last House on the Left shocked audiences with its graphic and unflinching portrayal of interpersonal violence, paving the way for a whole host of cheap imitators looking to capitalize on its success. It is Wes Craven s original alone, however, that remains one of the true watershed moments in horror (and indeed, film) history.

    Tenet...

The latest cinema film suffering category cuts for its 12A rated UK cinema release

    Link Here17th August 2020

Tenet is a 2020 UK / USA action Sci-Fi thriller by Christopher Nolan.
Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki. BBFC link IMDb

Armed with only one word -- Tenet -- and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.

The film has been cut in the UK for a 12A rated cinema release. The BBFC passed the film 12A for moderate violence, threat, domestic abuse, infrequent strong language after BBFC advised pre-cuts.

    The BBFC commented:
    • This film was originally seen for advice. The company was advised it was likely to be classified 15 uncut but that their preferred 12A classification could be obtained by making small changes to one scene to remove shots of a man kicking a woman. When the film was submitted for formal classification, the shots in question had been removed and the film was classified 12A.
This comment refers to the scene where Elizabeth Debicki's character is on the floor and Kenneth Branagh's kicks her in the body several times.

In the US the film was MPA PG-13 rated for intense sequences of violence and action, some suggestive references and brief strong language. Presumably the US release is uncut, but as the film is a UK/US co-production it is remotely possible that the cuts have been made to a common version.

Mikey was passed 18 uncut for 1992 cinema release. However the certificate was withdrawn in the fallout of the James Bulger killing. Wiki explains:

The film was withdrawn from release in the United Kingdom following the James Bulger murder in Liverpool in 1993. It had been classified with an 18 certificate for cinema in November 1992, but head censor James Ferman demanded the certificate be returned.

The BBFC cinema certificate is no longer in the BBFC database.

It was also noted the film is available in the UK via Amazon Prime. However BBFC bans do not apply to online video. Note that BBFC bans do apply to TV broadcasts, although TV companies can get the nod from the BBFC that if a film were to be submitted it would no longer be banned.
