Islington Adult World is permitted to open

Adult World IslingtonA licensed adult shop has won the right to display mannequins in the window, as long as the display doesn't involve anything naughty.

Adult World in Islington Green, Islington, has also been given permission to stay open until 10pm rather than 8pm, following the new rulings made at an Islington Council meeting on Wednesday.

Owner Gary Best asked the council for permission to remove the opaque film on the windows which prevented passers-by from seeing in. Best assured Islington Council that Adult World sells high-quality underwear on the ground floor, while the basement, where customers can buy films, is the only licensed area of the store.

The licensing hours, which Adult World also inherited from Clone Zone, restricted trading until 8pm Monday to Saturdays. Best wanted the shop to be allowed to stay open until 10pm and to trade on Sundays.

Two residents and local Labour councillor Martin Klute wrote letters of objection to the council about the bid to change the licence.

But Best said: We've had a couple of complaints and have taken 18 DVDs which are for sale in Virgin and HMV away. We've taken away business to make people happy. We have to ask people to leave the shop at 8pm because they often come in after work, which is where our request for longer hours comes from.

Councillor Tracy Ismail (Liberal Democrat), who chaired the meeting, said: We could add a condition to the licence that only clothing is displayed in the window - no mannequins with whips in their hands or anything naughty - and no kind of 'attachments'.

The committee agreed that Adult World could stay open from 10am to 10pm Mondays to Saturdays, and from noon until 8pm on Sundays including bank holidays, but excluding Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

They also agreed that the opaque film on the window could be removed, and window displays permitted, as long as they involve non-adult merchandise only. General goods must be located at the front of the shop, with the adult area and the general goods areas clearly defined.

Adult World, Oxford   News: Contemporary in Oxford...

News from Adult World, 19th February 2007

We’ve spent over £50,000 on a complete shop re-fit at our Oxford store. The store now has a contemporary feel with a dark wood floor and bright interiors.

With modern fixtures, we have specific areas targeted to ensure all customers are accommodated for when they come to shop at Adult World in Oxford.

Our prices are very competitive and you can source our product here at internet prices.

The shop was launched in Mid February in a blaze of local publicity.

A two week radio campaign was instigated with local radio station FOX FM . This was an outstanding success with offers and giveaways galore. Coinciding with a specific campaign in the local press, customers in Oxford and the surrounding areas have benefited, from our February launch.

Adult World’s relationship with local business and the community was further strengthened when they sponsored Oxford Brookes Students’ Union SHAG week campaign. We helped the students to populate some goodie bags with some free gifts, culminating in Adult World’s entrance into the quiz on Valentines’ night. We lost, even though we were represented by our best selling blow-up dolls and best selling lines of lingerie.

A special thanks to the Students of Oxford for their support of Adult World during our campaign. We’ve acknowledged their support with further discounts applied until the end of February and beyond.

I know this review section is supposed to be about shops. How about a shop, a cinema, preview booths, a striptease (four times daily), Oh! yes! I forgot...a private lapdance... No kidding!

As far as I know this place is a one-off! This 'shop' is simply a 'one-stop' sex central

The sex shop alone is worth a visit. They must have 2000 titles available. A great range of toys and clothing too... there were a few ladies in there and couples. As well the usual mix of guys like myself.

It has a 100 seat cinema... playing many of the latest releases. Special preview booths are there too... and I've only ever seen these in Amsterdam. These were great. You can check out a movie before you buy it. The striptease was free, as it was in with the cost of the admittance into the cinema.. About £10 I think. Not sure about the private dance, but this was definitely available.

The staff were very helpful and polite and asked if their help were needed, which it wasn't as they'd already done such a good display of categorizing their movies.

As I reached to pay for my DVD's... My eye was taken to a fantastic area for all sorts of sexual enhancers... too many to mention here.. But I'm sure they'll be needed in a few years.

A one-stop sex centre in the middle of the country a stone's throw away from New Street Station... A wonderful idea in a great location... well worth a visit... How much was that lapdance again?

A large shop with a good deal of stock, including many magazines and DVDs. Very friendly staff, the bloke behind the counter is eager to help. Prices are average for sex shops. Not at all seedy. Well worth a visit.
